This Valentine’s Month, we’re thinking about the kind of love that catches you off guard.

There’s a reason Heated Rivalry has taken the world by storm. There’s a slow burn to how the love between Ilya and Shane develops from infatuation to deep connection, from secrecy to honesty, from rivalry to companionship. It’s the ultimate win.
If you haven’t watched it yet, we recommend it. The series gives a window into the challenges of a same-sex relationship in a heteronormative environment. Watching their love prevail is heartwarming. And seeing Shane’s parents support their child in his loving relationship will melt your heart—you’ll definitely want a tuna melt when the series reaches its conclusion!

That scene from When Harry Met Sally is the gold standard for "the grand gesture."

What makes it so poignant isn't just the romance; it’s all the things Harry has learned about Sally. He isn't listing Sally’s highlight reel; he’s listing her quirks, the way she orders sandwiches, the way she takes an hour and a half to order, and even the crinkle above her nose!

It’s about truly being seen and loved for the specific, messy details that make you you.

That is what makes being with the right person so important, and knowing they love you for all you are—quirks and all.

Take a Moment by Jennifer Klein:

Valentine’s Day is often about "the grand gesture," but at The Counseling Center, we know the "simple and plain" gestures often mean the most. 💌

Inspired by the song from Waitress, we’re reflecting on the power of being "seen." Feeling like you truly matter is the root of healthy attachment. When we feel discarded or forgotten, our self-concept suffers. But when we are told "I'm right here beside you," we find our center.

Take a moment this week to tell someone they matter. It might be exactly what they need to hear.

Happy Valentines Day!

“Our efforts in life don't have to be perfect to be OK. Sometimes, we allow the perfect to prevent the good, so it is advisable to tolerate the good enough.”

"Let them" is the mindset shift we all need, but it’s harder than it looks.
While Mel Robbins’ "Let Them" theory is a brilliant way to frame boundaries, it’s actually rooted in deep-seated clinical concepts like Locus of Control and Emotional Detachment.

In therapy, we help you nurture and build these tools:
Healing from people-pleasing, reducing social anxiety, and protecting your peace in difficult relationships.

Sometimes, "letting them" triggers our own fears of abandonment or loss of control. If you’re struggling to let go, let’s talk. The Counseling Center is here to help you navigate the "why" behind the "how" and practicing the “let them” so that you can focus on “let me”.

We hope you will join us on Wednesday, February 11th, as we showcase the personal and professional experience of Bronxville resident/author Benjamin Perks, an expert in overcoming trauma and parent-child attachment (defined as a deep emotional bond, crucial for development): He's changing lives.

This evening will include a moderated dialogue between Ben and Counseling Center therapists Jenn Jordan and Jennifer Klein. The last 30 minutes will be open for questions from the audience.

In Season 5, Episode 11 of Friends ("The One with All the Resolutions"), the Friends cast provides a masterclass in why New Year’s goals often fail. From a therapeutic lens, their resolutions are a perfect example of focusing on external quirks rather than genuine internal growth.

While we laugh at Ross’s leather pants or Rachel’s struggle with gossip, these goals highlight the toxicity we often wrap around self-improvement. Instead of seeking healthy evolution, the characters try to "fix" parts of their personalities they deem annoying. This "fix-it" mentality treats the self as a project to be completed rather than a person to be nurtured and cared for.

Why this didn’t end up working:

Performance vs. Progress: These goals are about how they appear to others, not how they feel within themselves.

The Perfection Trap: The episode shows how "all-or-nothing" thinking turns self-improvement into a source of stress rather than a path to peace.

This year, let’s leave the "leather pants" resolutions behind. Real growth isn't about eliminating your quirks; it’s about understanding and embracing them. You are special and you are seen.
