Research links heart disease, artificial sweetener use

A 100,000-person study published in the journal The BMJ indicates potential links between heart disease and the consumption of artificial sweeteners, Bloomberg reported. The sweeteners were linked to an 18% greater risk of cerebrovascular disease; aspartame in particular was tied to a 17% increased risk for cerebrovascular events, and acesulfame potassium and sucralose were linked to higher risk for coronary heart disease. Study links heart conditions with poor pediatric oral health

Study links heart conditions with poor pediatric oral healthA study published in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report found that, when compared to those without heart conditions, children and adolescents with heart conditions were more likely to have poor oral health (17.2% versus 13.7%) and teeth in fair or poor condition (9.9% versus 5.3%), HealthDay News reported. The researchers, who used data from the National Survey of Children's Health from 2016 to 2019, noted that 83% of children with heart conditions had received dental care during the previous year, and that those with a heart condition as well as a developmental or intellectual disability, low household income and lack of well-child visits or no medical home were more likely to have poor oral health. Two Studies Provide Evidence That Masks Protect Children From Coronavirus

The New York Times (9/24) reported that “two studies, published on Friday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, provide additional evidence that masks protect children from the coronavirus, even when community rates are high and the contagious Delta variant is circulating.” One study in Arizona “found that schools that did not require staff and students to wear masks were 3.5 times as likely to have a virus outbreak as schools that required universal masking.” Meanwhile, the second study “looked at infections among all children in 520 different counties across the United States, and found that once the public school year started, pediatric cases increased at a far higher rate in counties where schools did not require masks.” To view the articles, click here and here.

High dairy fat intake tied to lower cardiovascular risk

A study published in PLOS Medicine found high dairy fat intake was associated with a lower cardiovascular disease risk. High dairy fat consumption was not associated with a greater risk of death, according to the report in The Guardian, and researcher Kathy Trieu, Ph.D., said there is "increasing evidence to show that the type of dietary fat, or the source of dietary fat, is actually more important than the amount of fat." Babies Show Strong Immune Response To Coronavirus, Study Finds

HealthDay (6/14) reports, “Babies have a strong immune response to the virus that causes COVID-19,” according to researchers who “assessed the immune systems of four infants under 3 months of age who had recovered from COVID, and compared them with adults who also had recovered from the disease.” The results – published in Cell Reports Medicine – found that “compared to adults, the babies produced relatively high levels of antibodies and immune cells that can specifically protect against the SARS-CoV-2 virus.”

Anecdotal evidence suggesting a cause for Autism Spectrum in Children

As a pediatric dentist for over 20 years, I have seen a marked increase in the number of Autistic children in our population. This current pandemic has afforded me the time to review my findings. My findings suggest that a possible cause for Autistic Spectrum in children is due to anti depressants taken by women prior and during pregnancy. I have interviewed many mothers of my autistic patients to find that there is indeed a common thread here. Most of the mothers I have spoke with had indeed been prescribed and taken forms of Anti-Depresents within 5 years of pregnancy with a child on the spectrum.

Anti-depressents for the most part leave traces behind in fatty tissue. These drugs can stay in fat cells for years and are released slowly over years into the rest of the body. We know that Ant-Depressent medications alter brain chemistry. Also we know that a fetus’s brain stem starts developing at about 3 weeks and by 8 weeks the brain stem resembles that if a newborn.

Anti-depresents have been wildly distributed and prescribed in 1st world nations, and very little to none in developing or 3rd world countries. This theory would also explain why we see so little autism in 3rd world countries.

Another interesting antidote deals with a population of refugees that were brought to Israel. Prior to this populations move from a 3rd world country, they had little to know Autistic children. Within 1 generation of living in Israel, suddenly that same population had an equal rate of Autistic children as the rest of the country. If you desire to look into detail on this, you can easily do this research yourself.

So how could Anti-Depresents cause Autism Spectrum disorder? Well since the brain stem starts developing around the 3rd week of pregnancy, and since the fetus grows at an astounding rate, it is not hard to see that the mother’s fat cells would be breaking down to feed the developing fetus. This break down of fat cells is what gives the pregnant mother the desire to eat more. Hence the cause for cravings and such.

If these trace compounds from the anti-depressant are released, and are able to reach the developing fetus, affecting the development of the brain stem evening the smallest of ways, then there you have the most likely cause for Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Why has this not been in the news? I do not know, it is quite possible that evidence of this theory has been suppressed because of the backlash it would cause to drug companies and the ripple effect on the economy. Just look at what the theory of Mercury being the cause did to the vaccine companies.

If any of you are interested please feel free to do your own research and either dispute or support my theory.

COVID - 19 Update

We have been following the health protocols that have been mandated for Covid-19 for some years long before there was COVID-19.

Every patient's Temperature is taken and charted, along with their height, weight, blood pressure, and Blood Oxygenation levels, prior to each examination.

We have done this to make sure our patients were healthy prior to treatment and also to monitor other potential health concerns not limited to , Diabetes, Eating Disorders, Failure to Thrive, Oral Cancer Screenings, etc.

Each of our treatment rooms has a UV light which floods the room with UV light, after the room has been disinfected and wiped down. The UV light that floods the rooms kills/deactivates Air Born Infectious particles.

Furthermore, our Air handling system for the entire Office also has a UV light in the return air to disinfect any air born particles that might have made it through our HEPPA Filter.

To date, there has not been a documented case of COVID-19 being transmitted through a Dental Office Setting.

If we did not feel it was safe to Deliver care to our patients, then we would not be open. We treat our patients the way we would want ourselves and our children treated and in a setting that we feel comfortable in.

Experts In UK, Italy Warn Of Possible Connection Between COVID-19 And Inflammatory Disease In Children

Reuters (4/27) reports, “Italian and British medical experts are investigating a possible link between the coronavirus pandemic and clusters of severe inflammatory disease among infants who are arriving in hospital with high fevers and swollen arteries.” In northern Italy, physicians “have reported extraordinarily large numbers of children under age 9 with severe cases of what appears to be Kawasaki disease, more common in parts of Asia,” and physicians “have made similar observations” in Britain. According to Reuters, “The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has yet to see something similar in the United States, which has the greatest number of coronavirus infections and deaths.” Dr. Yvonne Maldonado, chair of the academy’s committee on infectious disease, said in an email, “We are not aware of any reports of this phenomenon in the United States.” Dr. Sean O’Leary, also part of the AAP committee, “said his hospital has seen several cases of Kawasaki this year, but none in the more than 30 children admitted for COVID-19.” He added, “Even if it is related, is a very rare complication. ...If it were more common, we’d already have a pretty good idea about it in the United States.”
CNN (4/27) reports, “A small but rising number of children are becoming ill with a rare syndrome that could be linked to coronavirus, with reported cases showing symptoms of abdominal pain, gastrointestinal symptoms and cardiac inflammation, UK health care bosses and pediatrics specialists have warned.” The Paediatric Intensive Care Society UK (PICS) on Sunday “tweeted an ‘urgent alert’ from the National Health Service England about a small rise in the number of cases of critically ill children presenting ‘overlapping features of toxic shock syndrome and atypical Kawasaki disease with blood parameters’ – with some of the children testing positive for [COVID-19].”
Newsweek (4/27) reports the alert also said, “There is a growing concern that a [COVID-19] related inflammatory syndrome is emerging in children in the UK, or that there may be another, as yet unidentified, infectious pathogen associated with these cases.” According to Newsweek, “these alerts are a standard way of making sure clinicians are aware of any potential emerging conditions so children can be given the right care quickly.”

So Far This Flu Season, There Have Been 20,000 To 40,000 Flu-Related Deaths, CDC Estimates

NPR (3/9) that even though US health officials are now waiting “to see just how bad a public health challenge COVID-19 will pose, they still have to deal with” influenza. The CDC estimates that so far this flu season, the US has “had between 30 and 40 million illnesses.” Of those cases, “about half were ill enough to seek medical care, and between 300,000 to 500,000 people required hospitalization.” The CDC also “estimates that” so far this season, “there have been 20,000 to 40,000 deaths in the US.” In other words, “that’s a thousand times more deaths in the United States than have been blamed on the coronavirus so far.”
Synthetic Universal Flu Vaccine Appears Successful Against Broad Range Of Influenza Viruses In Clinical Trial. HealthDay (3/9) reports researchers found in a clinical trial that “a single dose of a synthetic universal flu vaccine called FLU-v appears capable of providing safe long-term protection across a broad spectrum of influenza viruses.” The findings were published in the Annals of Internal Medicine. The article says that FLU-v “now awaits a phase 3 trial that will test how well it actually protects against the seasonal flu.”

Flu Season Worse Than Expected For Children, CDC Reports

NBC News (3/7) reported “at least 34 million Americans have been sickened with the flu so far this season and an estimated 20,000 people have died from it, with the illness taking a higher-than-expected toll on children, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Friday.” Rates of hospitalization “among school children and young adults are higher than in recent seasons, and rates among kids ages 4 or younger are the highest on record at this point in the season – even higher than during the second wave of the 2009 flu pandemic.” Even though, “thankfully, coronavirus has largely been sparing children, for reasons that aren’t clear,” the same coronavirus precautions “can help protect them against the flu as well, such as good hand hygiene, coughing into the elbow, and staying home when sick.” Dr. Henry Bernstein, a professor of pediatrics at Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell in Hempstead, NY, and a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Infectious Diseases, said, “The influenza virus is causing significant morbidity and mortality across the country. ... Activity is still widespread, and it’s been particularly harsh on children.”

Pediatric Dentist

Selecting a pediatric doctor or dentist can be one of the most difficult decisions a parent has to make. Your child's health is paramount, and you want to be sure that the professional you choose will have your child's best interests and safety at heart.

If you take your children to a Pediatrician, shouldn’t you also bring them to a Pediatric Dentist?

Pediatric Dentistry is the specialty of dentistry that focuses on the oral health and unique needs of young people. After completing a four-year dental school curriculum, at Columbia University, and two additional years of rigorous training at Brookdale Hospital Medical Center, I was awarded a certificate in Pediatric Dentist. This specialized program of study and hands-on experience prepared me to meet the unique needs of your infants, children and adolescents, including persons with special health care needs. Unfortunately in this day and age of insurance motivated treatment, the most important aspects of the patient / dental office relationship have fallen by the waste side. Not in our office though!

All treatment is performed without the need for Sedation, Drugs, Gas or Restraint.
