WHY EATING FRUITS AND VEGETABLES MATTERS FOR YOUNG PEOPLE'S LONG-TERM HEALTH

Many young people struggle to eat enough fruits and vegetables, but maintaining a diet with at least four servings a day can significantly benefit heart health later in life. While most existing research focuses on older adults, the Minneapolis Heart Institute’s CARDIA study took a closer look at adults aged 18 to 30. The study examined the presence of Coronary Artery Calcium (CAC), a key indicator of heart disease risk in this younger age group.

Beginning in 1985, the CARDIA study tracked the diets of more than 5,000 participants over 20 years. At the end of the study, researchers assessed their eating patterns through questionnaires and used CAC tomography scans to measure calcium buildup in their arteries. Participants were split into two groups: one with a high fruit and vegetable intake (7–8 servings daily) and another with a lower intake (about 2–3 servings per day).

Results showed a clear difference. Those who ate more fruits and vegetables had a 26% lower risk of developing artery calcium buildup, highlighting the importance of healthy eating habits early in life for long-term heart health.

HOLIDAY HEARTBURN

Thanksgiving brings joy, food and for many, heartburn. Around 30% of Americans experience heartburn more than once a week. Heartburn, acid reflux, and GERD occur when stomach acid flows into the esophagus. Contrary to popular belief, frequent heartburn may be caused by low stomach acid, not too much. This leads to an overcompensation of acid production, causing discomfort and potential damage.

Poor gut health can also be linked to symptoms like brain fog, skin issues, allergies, and even conditions like depression, anxiety, ADHD, and autoimmune disorders.

While antacids offer short-term relief, long-term use can harm your health by depleting calcium from bones.

To reduce acid reflux:
- Identify and avoid trigger foods (e.g., alcohol, soda, chocolate, citrus, spicy foods, fatty foods).
- Eat smaller meals.
- Stay upright after eating.
- Avoid regular use of aspirin, ibuprofen, and certain medications that relax the esophageal sphincter.

If lifestyle changes don’t help, consider consulting your wellness provider.
