There are so many good reasons to justify taking a day off.

However, the reality is that most of us simply don’t, even when we need to. And rarely do we take time off to truly care for ourselves, but that’s exactly what we need.

Trying to “do it all” or drive ourselves too far without a break can lead to additional stress, burnout, and unhealthy consequences.

Like your physical health, your mental health relies on rest, recovery practices, and breaks in order for it to function optimally.

So, this is your sign. Take a break.

For tips on how to design a truly restorative day off, check out our therapists' monthly Reflection article: https://goodhumanwork.com/reflections

While it can be hard to have empathy for others while also needing to speak up for ourselves and our own experiences that may differ, it's absolutely possible to hold onto both.

Empathy doesn't mean agreement - it means we seek to understand another person's perspective and experience. We can honor our own perspective and experience by voicing it and expecting others to have empathy for us. This reciprocal act allows for us to build healthier, more meaningful human relationships.

So yes, it's hard. But it's worth it and helps build respect for ourselves and others.

We believe there are five core needs that we must meet in order to truly feel human and fully connected to other humans.

Oftentimes, we structure our lives to meet several of these basic human needs, but we may lose sight of the others. If we can identify our unmet human needs, we can then do the good work that will make us more human again.

Let’s all strive to do more good human work. Consider how you are living out the core needs:

Trust, Respect, Connection, Engagement, and Flexibility

Where can you reflect and improve? With yourself? In your relationships? Out in the world and online?

Life can be hard. So let's look for and celebrate all the humans out there who are doing good human work - who make life better for all of us. Including you. Who else around you is doing some good human work out in the world - in your relationships, in your neighborhood, and in your communities? Today's a good day to thank them, and yourself, for putting in the effort. Because it takes all of us.

Let's do a quick check on your relationship with yourself:

- Have you reflected lately on how you're taking care of yourself in meaningful, healthy ways? (Eating well, moving more, restoring yourself...)

- When was the last time you checked in on your interpersonal boundaries?

- How are you improving trust with yourself?

- Are you standing up for yourself when it matters most?

If you need support with this, we have therapists with open availability to give you tips on improving your relationship with self.

While a therapist helps as a guide on your life journey, it's not our job to tell you where you should go. The destination is up to you. We can help you discover where you want to end up or give suggestions and alternatives. We can help you understand how to get there after you've decided. But the decision is always yours.
