There’s something about warm water
that remembers ... connection. play. the core of us.

After our last gathering, one participant wrote:
“It’s been a sleepy, peaceful quiet day… that dance is still moving in me.
What incredible beauty, freedom, playfulness, trust…
rolling up and over one another, like sleek seals.
A school of friendly fish.
Some embryonic dream world where we were all once dolphins and get to be again.”

This is Contact Improvisation
held in 4 feet of warm water —
so you can float, submerge, stand, breathe,
rest whenever you need.
No experience necessary.
Touch is never assumed.
Solo dancing welcome.
This is a closed container for deep listening, consent, and fluid exploration.

There's a myth that doing contact improvisation means you have to touch people.

But the truth to me is that the core of this practice is presence, physical honesty, and deep listening. Listening to others, yes, but also and first to ourselves. It's a great place to practice honoring our needs and boundaries, moment to moment.

Last week in my contact improvisation class at
We played a lot with weight sharing. This week we'll also be practicing being heavy when we don't want to give our weight, atuning and connecting without touch, and leaving dances. These parts of CI don't always get as much press, but they're so vital to having super rich fun dances.

What happens when meditation starts to move?

Today (and some Thursdays going forward):

Contemplative Dance Practice (CDP) is a meditative movement form that combines sitting meditation with free-form, improvisational dance. Developed by Barbara Dilley at Naropa University in the 1970s, it functions as a "dancer's meditation hall," allowing practitioners to explore inner sensations and present-moment awareness, alone or in a group. Open to all, no experience or dance background necessary.

If new to CDP, please arrive promptly by 12:30 to get oriented to the practice. Surry Gatherings, 2nd floor, $10-15 (no one turned away for lack of funds)

A moment of practice with Molly Gawler, .music and

I'm sharing several original songs that I've never performed in public before, so grateful to this crew for making the process not only not scary, but rich joyful, what a dream band!

We'll be playing this coming Wednesday, 9/24, if the weather is good we'll be outside around a fire, come at 6 or 7 to be nourished by the by-donation community dinner , and stay for music at 8 (also by donation)!

It's going to be a great night, I'd love to share it with you 🌛
