This kind of article reinforces the importance of our mission to “counter” the current lack of transparency and push for more regulation on the Beauty Industry:
THE WHAT, WHERE & WHY
WHAT?
-Toxic PFAS or Polyfluoroalkyl substances are
also known as “forever chemicals” because they do not breakdown naturally in the body once absorbed.
-Companies do not add these PFA’s intentionally but there is NO process for testing to avoid ending up in the final product.
-There is no regulation or requirement on these companies by the FDA to disclose or test for PFA’s
WHERE?
-Found in “products with high levels of organic fluorine an indicator of PFAS, in over half of 231 make up and personal care samples. Including lipstick, eyeliner , mascara, foundation, concealer , lip balm, blush, nail polish and more”
Particularly waterproof mascara, foundations and liquid lipstick
WHY?
-This is the first study of this kind - and the concern is that the products are used daily leading to significant toxic exposure
-Look for companies that do the work like Beautycounter who batch test all of their products for harmful ingredients
It's not clear which brands tested positive but I'm hoping we know soon so consumers can make educated choices in what and how they purchase. Transparency is key and pick companies that take the guesswork out of the equation!!
