Heartshare Human Services of New York

Heartshare Human Services of New York We champion and empower the City’s most overlooked and underestimated by promoting health & well-being, creating stability, and unlocking futures.

Heartshare champions and empowers New York City’s most overlooked and underestimated by promoting health and well-being, creating stability, and unlocking futures. Heartshare exists to remove obstacles, build stability, and allow for greater self-belief, self-advocacy, and independence. We support two specific populations across all of New York City: children and adults with developmental disabilities; and children and families dealing with the trauma associated with family separation. Each population faces its own distinct set of challenges and obstacles — and we are set up accordingly to meet them with understanding, evidence-based solutions, and interconnected programming.

Meet Noah, a talented student at The Heartshare School, our K-12 school in Brooklyn for children with developmental disabilities. Noah is not only an active member of the student-run jewelry business Ash & Co., but also part of the newly formed student-run print company Heartshare Designs.

Noah developed his love of music thanks to his grandfather, but after his grandfather’s passing, Noah put down his guitar. It wasn’t until Mr. Lloyd from the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music began teaching at The Heartshare School that Noah picked up the guitar again and rediscovered his passion for playing. Noah’s favorite band is U2, and he hopes to continue growing as a guitarist with Mr. Lloyd by his side.

NEW on the Heartshare Blog: American Dream Program scholar Rodney Badger draws on his experience as a former youth in foster care to empower others and illuminate a path of hope. Our latest impact story spotlights Rodney’s journey from a shy, unsure teenager navigating a complicated past to a confident, empowered individual taking center stage at our 2025 Fall Benefit. We are so proud of Rodney, and we know you will be too! See more of Rodney’s journey via the link below.

Last week, Heartshare celebrated Valentine’s Day all across the agency, filling each day with special activities and plenty of love. Some of the festivities included cookie decorating and arts and crafts at our group residences for adults ages 21 and older with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Our special education preschools also joined the fun with heart-themed celebrations in their classrooms, and students from our Heartshare School held a Valentine’s Day sale for their jewelry business, Ash & Co. The week was filled with so many fun moments and, of course, plenty of heart! 💙

In honor of Valentine’s Day, we asked some of our American Dream Program youth to write thank-you notes to their coaches! Our ADP coaches at Heartshare are dedicated staff, trained in motivational interviewing and trauma-informed support. They build trusting relationships with our youth in foster care, meet them where they are, and help them set and achieve goals, even after they transition out of foster care.

Check out some of the heartfelt messages our youth shared, and thank you to every member of our Heartshare family for your dedication, compassion, and the difference you make each day! 💙

The contributions of Black frontline workers, particularly in healthcare and service sectors, have been vital to American history. In 2025, 40% of frontline staff at New York State’s Developmental Disability service providers identified as Black. At Heartshare, that number is even higher: 53% of our staff self-identify as Black, and we celebrate this strength and diversity every day.

Black History Month is a time of special recognition, but at Heartshare, our commitment to honoring Black history and excellence extends well beyond February. Thank you to our essential staff for your dedication, compassion, and leadership. 💙

Our ADP Winter Dinner brought together our amazing post-secondary scholars from Heartshare’s American Dream Program for a night of celebration, connection, and community! From delicious food and creative mocktails to laughter and memories, it was an unforgettable evening. We also proudly unveiled the new YODE Lounge—a vibrant gathering space designed by youth, for youth. Catch all the highlights and watch the full video now! 💙

What better way to spend a chilly NYC afternoon than at the museum! In coordination with the Brooklyn Museum’s Access Program, providing accessible visits to the museum for all guests, some of our Artshare artists from Heartshare’s Day Programs were able to take in their newest exhibit, Monet x Venice, drawing on their knowledge and understanding of art history, Monet’s work, and the expressionist movement.

Heartshare’s Artshare program invites members of our Developmental Disabilities community to experience and engage with the arts through both performing and visual arts programming across the organization.

Thank you, Brooklyn Museum, for hosting our artists! 💙

At Heartshare, empowering people is at the core of everything we do—not only the individuals and communities we serve, but also the dedicated staff who make up our agency. Our Management Training Program (MTP) is one such tool for fostering growth in new managers across the Heartshare organization. For over 15 years, the program has helped create the next wave of leaders within the agency.

Visit the link below to hear more about Heartshare’s dedication to growth, learning, and leadership, and to meet the MTP Class of 2025. 💙

A huge thank you to our incredible volunteers from Apollo Global Management who helped assemble winter activity bags filled with games, crafts, and snacks for 120 youth in Heartshare St. Vincent’s Family Services Prevention Program! Our goal at Heartshare is to support as many youth and families navigating the child welfare system as possible. Our Prevention Program provides supportive services with the ultimate goal of keeping families together, helping youth avoid entering foster care.

The end-of-year season can be a tough time for families seeking support and stability. We're grateful to have such generous partners at Apollo standing with us to provide comfort and joy to ALL children and families during the holidays. 💙

At Heartshare Pre-Ks, we work hard to create a caring, supportive environment for children ages 3 to 5 with special needs. We believe that when families are involved, every child has a better chance of growing and succeeding. That’s why we invite families to join us throughout the year at events like parent-teacher meet-and-greets, family reading sessions, sensory play days, and our annual Autism Awareness Parade. When families and teachers team up, children feel more confident, supported, and ready to learn. By working together, we help build a stronger community for every child. 💙
