As Black Maternal Health week comes to a close. We should talk about divestment. Divestment from what? From spaces that perpetuate harm and don’t serve out best interest. One of the options that most don’t consider is birthing at home. Birthing at home is not just about having an unmedicated birth it’s about birthing undisturbed, respected, and having autonomy. This is going to be a great conversation with Shawna King Home birth midwife. Join us tomorrow @ 8:30pm 4/17/22.

Tia Dowling says, fill your cup up so high that it overflows. It is from that excess that you give to others.

As our gift to you, here are three ways to fill up your cup in pregnancy and postpartum:

1. Take moments to pause + renew
Walk outside, go into the bathroom or brush your teeth and spritz your face with some water.

2. Text a friend when things get overwhelming. Make sure you have a rock to lift you up when you’re tired.

3. Nourish yourself
Eat delicious snacks and drink water to give you energy.

Lucky for us, Tia Dowling will be teaching the next Express Childbirth Education class on April 11th.

Full transparency Moment: So I don’t often ask for help for big things unless I absolutely have to. In the last 5 + days I have had to call in my village. For prayer, in person support and for advocacy. My mouth has been hurting since last Friday. It started gradual but by Friday night I was in excruciating pain. I couldn’t sleep or eat. I had to cancel my entire weekend. In hopes to make it to Monday to get to my dentist. Went to urgent care and got some pain relief until then. However it still was horrible. Monday morning at 8am came and I went to the dentist and had a partial root canal and something called an inclusion. By 8:30pm I was back in the same spot. I went back to the dentist Tuesday morning @ 8:00am and my dentist said he couldn’t see what was wrong. He directed me to see my doctor which I did. We started to do a whole work up but my doctor told me that it was dental pain. I have to talk with them. I went back to the office yesterday and thank God my dentist wasn’t there. I got a referral to a dentist in the city and Sidney helped me. They did a thorough work up and Sidney assured me I would be out of pain and I was. Take away was that Everyone needs 1 to 1 support. Having my husband there made all the difference in the world. I could barely speak or advocate for myself. Making people labor on their backs is horrible. When I laid down it made the pain worse. I’m so grateful for the calls, text and prayers. I’m feeling amazing and it has made me more in tuned for showing up for my clients!

This is a flash back for real. This was either day 1 or day 2 of my 1st ever doula training. I was so excited to be embarking on this great work. I still get very excited whenever I receive a call or text in the middle of the night, when someone is in labor. Looking back little did I know how this work impacts me and how I impact it. I thought I knew about racism but medical racism is structural and it kills birthing people in this country at a higher rate of less developed countries.

My 7 year old son saw this button on my jacket and asked me do white doulas matter too? I laughed and I said they do, but black doulas deserve extra shine. He then ran off. But it really had me thinking. What are all the things I experience as a BIPOC doula that my white counterparts don’t. Well obviously racism but also many scrutinize my training and abilities.
As a community doula I advocate in a way my white counterparts will never understand. Making sure those that are marginalized are heard. I’m happy I found my passion but I love being a black doula and I matter!
