Contel Lab

Contel Lab Our Lab at Brooklyn College is focused on the synthesis of transition-metal based compounds and thei

Our research program focuses on the synthesis and characterization of transition-metal complexes (mainly gold but also titanium, silver, copper, palladium and platinum) and their applications as: a) anticancer and antimicrobial agents and b) as catalysts in reactions of industrial interest (including but not limited to oxidations and C-C and C-Heteroatom bond formation). We are interested in understanding the mode of action of these complexes in order to rationalize their design for improved properties.

We are very happy to share this paper published in the special issue of the Journal of Inorganic Biochemistry to honor the scientific and mentoring career of Chris Orvig and his enormous influence in the fields of metals in medicine and radiochemistry.

The study of the speciation and stability of metal-based drugs and prodrug candidates in water and biological fluids is essential for subsequent translational studies. The patented water soluble Ru prodrug we report here has great potential as chemotherapeutic for triple negative breast cancer. We confirm that we can store this compound in aqueous solutions under conditions usually employed in hospitals or home settings without significant degradation to inactive species.

If you like NMR studies (including 2D 1H-15N HMBC) this paper is for you!

Congrats to all authors, including Dr. Esteban Urriolabeitia and Dr. Alvaro Sanchez Lopez, former undergraduate student Marayke Mayrata, former high school student Sophie McCarrick, former graduate student Javier Lopez-Hernandez, and graduate student Aaron Manu. Thanks to Dr. Michelle Neary for the crystallographic studies.

In addition to federal agencies, we thank American Cancer Society and Gray Foundation for support
