A couple of weeks ago, I went up to teach at the ArborVitae School of Traditional Herbalism in New Paltz, where I’m on faculty part-time.

I was teaching the first-year class about herbal medicine for the musculoskeletal system, and I demonstrated fire cupping to illustrate how the Six Tissue States — a traditional Western herbal assessment framework — show up in the body.

We placed a large glass cup on a student’s sacrum and observed something fascinating:

- A visible dimple under the cup suggesting underlying scar tissue
- Blanched, white skin after removal — indicating a cold/depleted tissue state

In healthy circulation, we expect to see pink; bright red can suggest heat; dark purple can indicate stagnation. The body always tells a story — you just have to know how to read it.

I love teaching students how hands-on therapies like cupping intersect with herbal assessment. It’s such a powerful way to connect traditional wisdom with what we can see and feel in real time.

Frozen shoulder (or adhesive capsulitis) is especially common in women in their 40s–50s. During perimenopause, declining estrogen can reduce elasticity and hydration in the joint capsule, making the shoulder more vulnerable to inflammation and stiffness. Thyroid imbalance and insulin resistance can also increase risk. Adhesive capsulitis takes a predictable course of 1-2+ years starting with a terribly painful inflammatory stage that progresses into scar tissue locking down the joint into extremely limited range of motion as the initial painful phase passes.

It slowly improves over time but massage and bodywork can be extremely helpful in the process. Gentle and supportive massage is best early on in the inflammatory phase, then deeper with stretching as the pain of the early phase decreases.

At Red Moon Wellness, we also use acupuncture, cupping, and herbal support to address both the local shoulder pain and the broader hormonal picture.

If your shoulder has been feeling “stuck,” you don’t have to just wait it out.

A client fell asleep midway through her massage the other day. When she woke up, she said she felt incredibly rested — even though it was such a short nap.

Have you ever drift into deep sleep during a massage and wake up feeling weirdly… refreshed? That’s actually super common — and a really good sign.

During massage, your body shifts into the parasympathetic nervous system (“rest + digest” mode), which helps lower stress hormones and allows your system to truly reset.

Many people leave feeling:
✨ rested
✨ mentally clearer
✨ lighter in their body
✨ calmer overall

Sometimes it’s the deepest relaxation your nervous system has had in weeks.

So if you doze off on the table? That’s totally common — it’s your body saying: thank you.

Why are muscle spasms more common in the winter?

Cold weather can cause muscles to tighten and circulation to slow down, which can make spasms and stiffness more likely—especially in the neck, shoulders, hips, and low back.

Massage therapy can help by:

✔️ Increasing circulation to cold, tight areas
✔️ Calming the nervous system (so the body stops bracing)
✔️ Releasing trigger points that can contribute to spasm patterns
✔️ Reducing inflammation and restoring mobility

Depending on what your body needs, a Red Moon Wellness LMT may use techniques such as:

✔️ Myofascial release to soften tight connective tissue
✔️ Trigger point therapy to address the root of muscle “grabbing”
✔️ Swedish massage to support circulation and relaxation
✔️ Slow, intentional deep tissue work to release chronic tension safely
✔️ Breath-based work to help regulate the nervous system

After your massage, you can support recovery by:

✔️ Using a heating pad to keep the area warm
✔️ Avoiding cold exposure when possible
✔️ Refraining from heavy lifting or strenuous activity for the rest of the day

Winter can be hard on the body—but the right treatment and aftercare can make a meaningful difference.

As the snow begins to thaw and we look toward spring, here are a few simple ways to help your body stay well through the final stretch of winter.

💙 Stay Warm
Layers matter. Keeping your joints and muscles warm helps support circulation and can reduce stiffness.

💙 Stay Active and Mobile
Movement encourages blood flow and helps prevent muscles and joints from tightening up. Even short indoor walks, stretching, or gentle yoga can make a noticeable difference.

💙 Stay Hydrated
Many people drink less water in the winter, but hydration plays an important role in muscle function, tendon pliability, and joint comfort. Keeping water nearby throughout the day can help support recovery and reduce cramping.

In the article, Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery Christopher Murawski, MD explains why aches can increase in cold weather, and why warmth, movement, and hydration are key to staying comfortable.
