If the lights are always on, they burn out.

Your body needs to have an off switch.

It needs an awareness of two:

One that says go
One that says stop
One that says right
One that says left

When it doesn’t, you might:

Feel pain that gets better at times but never goes away
Wake up unrested
Struggle to sleep
Have poor digestion or elimination

When your body has an on switch AND an off switch, you will:

Resolve pain
Sleep well
Feel alert when you want to be (without copious caffeine)
Notice progress in your workouts (without injury)

Does this sound like you?

The proof is in the pudding. ⬆️🙌😉

Far too often I hear from clients who spent months following the guidance of someone who failed to resolve their pain, improve their performance, or attain whatever their goal was.

I know there is an abundance of information out there—much of it conflicting.

But please know this: when your specific needs are addressed, you WILL notice improvement. 🎯

In fact, you should see some form of progress each time you see your provider. Yes. Read that again.

Keeping this one short and sweet, just like the proof that’s in the pudding of results you seek. 😉👊 🙌

Last month I was honored to have publish an article about my work with Local 600 members.

What I loved about this article was its emphasis on the stories of members who battled and overcame their injuries. 👊

In such a physically demanding career, it is paramount for those in the industry to know just how resilient the body is when given what it most needs. 🎯

is one such operator. Swipe to read his story!

Battling an injury you haven’t quite cracked the code on? DM me and let’s talk.

Your handheld position is hurting you 😬
Building on our post from last time, small changes in the way we load our joints can massively improve how efficiently the muscles around the joint can work.
Let’s take a moment to talk about physics and joints. When managing heavy loads like while operating a camera, the center of mass of the camera has a downward force as a result of gravity. (See slide 1).
If your forearm is relatively horizontal such that your fingers could point forward if they extend, your wrist must now create a counter-rotational torque into the hand grip to resist the downward (vertical) force of the camera (see slide 2).
Why is this a problem? This is an extremely inefficient load-management strategy for the small muscles, ligaments and bones around the wrist. Especially with a front-heavy camera, the significant torque imposed upon the wrist by a horizontal hand and forearm position resisting a vertical force (gravity) is a losing battle.
What is the solution? (See slides 3 & 4) Let your forearm be more vertical so that the downward force of the camera can be met by the upward force of your forearm, with minimal rotational torque on the wrist. Now, the bigger muscles of your shoulders and trunk can work to support the weight of the camera.
How can you make this even easier to sustain? Grab your or roll up a sound blanket to wedge under your arms. ➡️Please note: if you are having any significant pain while operating, please get assessed! You’ve got one body. Be nice to it.
If you’re tired of the aches that don’t go away or just want to know what to do now so they never become an issue, join me at this year’s where myself and several skilled operators from the will be talking all things handheld and longevity.

On a recent call with a client, she relayed how she hadn’t been keeping up with her workouts.

Life had gotten very busy after a family member fell ill and she became the primary care taker.

She told me how she found herself operating on only a few hours of sleep, day after day.

She had to single handedly lift her mother in law from the bed to a wheelchair.

From the wheelchair to the bath.

All. By. Herself. 🤯

In hearing this, I paused to recognize this amazing feat of both inner and outer strength.

Most people begin to fall apart when they can’t rest.

To have been able to do what she needed to do in this very stressful time speaks volumes to all of the movement skills she has built.

It reminded me how important it is that we step back and ask ourselves what it is we’re training for.

What is it that we want to be able to do and why?

Life’s ups and downs will come.

Our ability to be strong when others need support is invaluable.

Let me know what you’re training for and why it matters to you 👇👇👇

“What does it mean that I always get holes around the toe box of my shoe?” 🤔

Ever notice that you seem to get a hole in every pair of shoes in the same spot? 🧐

Maybe you bust through your shoes near your pinky toes? 😬

Or just above the big toe as that little guy works overtime for other joints that are slacking? 🫣

Or, the sole of your shoes may appear worn more around the outer heel such that the shoes sits on the floor at an angle from a foot that never pronates. 🫤

Where ever your shoes are wearing down the fastest, use it as information to know what you need more of! 🕵🏻‍♀️

The wear pattern on the soles of your shoes and any holes around the toe box will give you an idea of how you’re moving and where you may be a bit stuck. ✅

Take a look at your shoes and let me know in the comments what you find👟👞🥾🙌🏻🕵🏻‍♀️✅

“I stretch all the time, but my hamstrings feel so tight!” 😫⁣

Do you constantly feel the need to stretch your hammies? 😖⁣

Do you find yourself changing position, struggling to find one in which you feel relaxed? 😵‍💫⁣

Or, maybe you stand with your knees locked like this person? 🤔⁣

PSA: if this sounds familiar, you probably don’t need more flexibility. 😬⁣

Most folks I see demonstrate more than sufficient, if not excessive, extensibility in their hamstrings. 🤯⁣

And yet, they feel tight. 🧐⁣

Stretching, however, is only exacerbating the underlying issue. ❌⁣

The tightness they feel is a symptom of instability and overly lengthened muscles. 🕵🏻⁣

👉🏻 Want to feel less tight? ⁣

✅ Learn to load those hammies and unload quads and hip flexors. ⁣

✅ Let them provide the safety and stability your brain and body seek. ⁣

Strength Squad Elite enrollment ends tonight! ⁣

If you’re ready to feel less tight, more stable, and find the strength you’ve been struggling for, click that link in my bio! 🙌🏻

You don’t have to accept being in pain. ⁣

As says, pain is a request for change. ⁣

Pain is a sign that an underlying issue exists and your body is ready for you to get to the bottom of it. ⁣

And by you, I mean us! 😉🙌🏻⁣

AJ Strauman is like so many other clients who come to me and explain the—gulp—band aid solutions they’ve been given till then. 😳⁣

No wonder you still hurt! 😤⁣

The body is an integrated system. Therefore, you need an integrated solution that takes into consideration how your foot, or your shoulder can effect your back. 🕵🏻‍♀️⁣

If you’re ready to get to the root cause of your pain, let’s talk. 👊🏻⁣

Drop a comment below or DM me and let me know what you’re working to resolve lately. ⁣

Went to PT but didn’t resolve your issue? 👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼

Read on to hear about the experience of .straumanscott

I can't say enough good things about working with Liz.

In 2018 I developed hip pain which later became a stress fissure in my femur from improper form while running and operating.

Three rounds of traditional physical therapy relieved my hip pain temporarily, but couldn't solve the underlying issue that lead to recurrent injury.

Six months after I finished a round of PT, I'd be in pain again. As a new steadicam operator, these issues could have ended my career before it began.

Liz's analysis of the body's strengths and weaknesses is totally unlike the traditional PT approach. Rather than focusing only on the site of the pain, she looks at the whole body as a system, and finesses the disconnections at the start of the chain that manifest as injury at the end.

Rather than putting a band-aid on your symptoms, Liz finds and treats the cause of your issues. After working with her, I'm not only free of pain, I've future-proofed myself against re-injury. I can't recommend her enough!

Feeling a little stuck in your right side after long days of operating? 😬

Notice that it’s easy to rotate to the left, but rotating right feels restricted? Try it out if you’re not sure. 🧐

While working with a client recently, she said “I like these drills because it helps me remember I have a left side” 👀🤓

As a human, we are asymmetrical beings. Generally speaking, we tend like loading our right sides a bit more than our left.

As a camera operator, this natural asymmetry gets reinforced by the weight of the camera during handheld or regular stance steadicam work.

Here’s the thing.

👉🏼 Whatever you’re doing, you’re getting better at.

👉🏼 This concept is known as the SAID Principle (Specific Adaptation to Imposed Demands).

🔑 If you spend 60 hours a week getting jammed into that right side and fail to account for this imbalance by specifically improving your ability to load the left, things can start to hurt 😖

⬇️ Your strength gains can suffer
⬇️ You may feel like your sleep quality is off
⬇️ Your mood and digestion may also be suboptimal

As a human in the world, our ability to get on and off each leg equally is so important for how we feel, move, and even perceive ourselves.

✅ The good news is—your brain and body are malleable.

✅ The SAID Principle works both ways 🙌🏼

✅ With specific interventions targeting your missing movement capacities, you can regain access to the things your brain has forgotten exist. 💪🏻

If you’re tired of chasing your tail wondering why you still have nagging pain or don’t see the results you want in the gym, I got you.

Enrollment to my remote coaching program Strength Squad Elite is open to the waiting list! Link in my bio to get in there and finally get the attention you need to get the results you seek.

Testimonial Time! 📣📣📣 - Strength Squad member since July 2021!

One of the greatest things about working with Liz in Strength Squad Elite is that she’s deeply knowledgeable about the physical requirements of operating.

As a former camera assistant and current movement pro, Liz has helped me to overcome issues I thought I’d have to live with.

Since joining, I have reduced pain and numbness in my hands and arms, improved my stability, strength, and built mass to protect my shoulders and hips.

Liz really sees you as a whole and works to understand your needs and limitations. Even when I’ve been slammed with work, I still see growth in ways I never did before.

Despite the wear and tear that occurs from tough operating days and the toll of travel jobs, Strength Squad Elite has given me the tools I need to take care of my body no matter the circumstances.
