Ancient Song Ancient Song is a national birth justice organization.

We do this by ensuring that all pregnant, postpartum, and parenting people of color have access to high-quality, holistic doula care and services regardless of their ability to pay. When we say respect and care for your mama, we're talking about mother earth too because the two cannot be separated. Climate justice is maternal health justice. 🌎 🍃 🤰🏽

Climate change has a direct impact on the health and wellness of pregnant mothers and their babies and it disproportionately impacts Black mothers! When we fight for safe drinking water, cleaner air, more trees, and access to community gardens, it's not just about the planet, it's about our families and our futures.

It's estimated that extreme heat exposure during pregnancy is associated with a 27% increase in the risk of experiencing severe maternal morbidity, with Black mothers disproportionately impacted.

One of the ways we are addressing this at Ancient Song is by endorsing the Protecting Moms and Babies Against Climate Change Act which would:

💰 Invest in community-based programs to identify and address climate change related maternal and infant health risks, particularly in communities of color.

🏫 Provide funding to health professional schools to prepare future nurses, doctors, and other health care workers to address climate change-related risks for patients.

🌞 Establish an NIH consortium to advance research on climate change and maternal & infant health.

🤰🏽Develop a comprehensive strategy to identify and designate climate change risk zones for pregnant and postpartum people and their babies.

This weekend! 🗓️ 👟 As we think about Black maternal health and the path forward, we know that naturally, so much of our work centers on women but we are making a conscious effort to bring fathers to the forefront of the conversation as well.

Whether that’s for birth support preparedness, advocacy tips, or community building with other dads, we believe a father’s role is crucial and we want your voices heard too.

We didn't get here by accident. The maternal health crisis our mothers are facing was constructed over time. It was created when birth was medicalized, doulas and midwives were invalidated and forced out, and mothers' intuition about their own bodies was disregarded.

This system was not designed to keep us safe. So it's time to dismantle it.

At Ancient Song, we're pushing back. We're returning to our roots. We're providing spaces that are safe and compassionate because we understand birth is sacred and we don't believe pregnancy should be a death sentence.

🇭🇷 Croatia - 58 weeks with 100% pay until 6 months after birth, then a flat-rate benefit

🇬🇧 United Kingdom - 52 weeks with 6 weeks paid at 90%, and a flat rate from weeks 7-39 (weeks 40-52 unpaid)

🇦🇺 Australia - 52 weeks leave with 18 weeks paid at the federal minimum wage

🇧🇦 Bosnia 52 weeks paid at 50-100%

🇲🇪 Montenegro 52 weeks paid at 100%

🇮🇪 Ireland 42 weeks leave at 80-100% for 26 weeks

🇲🇰 North Macedonia 39 weeks at 100%

🇮🇹 Italy 22 weeks at 80%

🇷🇺 Russia 20 weeks at 100%

🇪🇪 Estonia 20 weeks at 100%

🇫🇷 France 18 weeks at 100%

WE COULD KEEP GOING!!! The fact remains the United States is the ONLY high income country that does not guarantee paid maternity leave. 🇺🇸 0 weeks. 0 pay.

No universal paid maternity leave. No guaranteed time to heal. No real protection for far too many families.

That is not accidental. It is a policy choice. ‼️

Until every family has guaranteed paid leave, this system will continue to fail the very people it depends on.

You can take action. Call your representatives. Push for federal paid leave. Support policies that protect birthing people and families. Share this post and refuse to normalize this cruelty. 📲

This is a statistic that should stop you right in your tracks. It should compel you to learn more, take action, and demand better.

Women and babies are dying in the United States and the vast majority of those deaths are preventable. At Ancient Song, we're disrupting the culture that's permitted this.

How? We advocate for policy change. We support and share the work of other maternal health organizations like and we're part of the Doulas 4 Democracy coalition. We provide culturally-competent doula services to Black and brown families regardless of their ability to pay. And we train those who feel called to champion birth justice. Through we offer full spectrum community based doula training programs.
