When we say respect and care for your mama, we're talking about mother earth too because the two cannot be separated. Climate justice is maternal health justice. ๐ ๐ ๐คฐ๐ฝ
Climate change has a direct impact on the health and wellness of pregnant mothers and their babies and it disproportionately impacts Black mothers! When we fight for safe drinking water, cleaner air, more trees, and access to community gardens, it's not just about the planet, it's about our families and our futures.
It's estimated that extreme heat exposure during pregnancy is associated with a 27% increase in the risk of experiencing severe maternal morbidity, with Black mothers disproportionately impacted.
One of the ways we are addressing this at Ancient Song is by endorsing the Protecting Moms and Babies Against Climate Change Act which would:
๐ฐ Invest in community-based programs to identify and address climate change related maternal and infant health risks, particularly in communities of color.
๐ซ Provide funding to health professional schools to prepare future nurses, doctors, and other health care workers to address climate change-related risks for patients.
๐ Establish an NIH consortium to advance research on climate change and maternal & infant health.
๐คฐ๐ฝDevelop a comprehensive strategy to identify and designate climate change risk zones for pregnant and postpartum people and their babies.
YOU can help by contacting your elected officials and letting them know this is legislation that is important to you. Spread awareness! Voice your concerns and get involved in your community whenever you can.
