For the first time ever, an ECMO team (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) was on standby at this year's TCS NYC Marathon—ready to step in if a runner experienced cardiac arrest.

Our Maimonides ECMO specialists, led by Dr. Saunders, were on-site providing expert support in Central Park, working alongside the NYRR medical response team.

This brought together a multidisciplinary group of experts — including perfusionists, nurses, and physician assistants — trained to deliver rapid, advanced cardiac life support right at the scene.

Looking ahead, this groundbreaking support is already being planned for future marathons and large-scale events. 💙
