We’re proud to share a recent publication in The American Journal of Emergency Medicine highlighting Maimonides Health’s innovative use of ECMO support at the 2025 NYC Marathon, authored by Dr. Paul C.Saunders, Chief, Cardiothoracic Surgery, and Dr. Matt S. Friedman of our Department of Emergency Medicine and National Medical Director of CrowdRx.

“Optimizing the circuit: A critical enhancement at the 2025 NYC Marathon” details how bringing advanced extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) capabilities directly to the marathon course strengthened emergency preparedness and lifesaving response during one of the world’s largest endurance events. Dr. Friedman and Dr. Saunders worked together to advance this critical enhancement in on-site emergency care.

Congratulations to both physicians on this important contribution to emergency medicine and marathon safety.

Meet Julie Huang, DO, an attending physician at Maimonides Cancer Center specializing in hematology and medical oncology, with a focus on breast and thoracic cancers.

As the first doctor in her family, Dr. Huang was inspired to pursue medicine after witnessing loved ones face serious illnesses, including Alzheimer’s disease and pediatric leukemia. Raised as an Asian American in a Cuban household in Harlem, she brings a deep understanding of how culture can shape patients’ experiences and decisions around serious illness.

Dr. Huang earned her Doctor of Osteopathy degree from the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed her internal medicine residency and hematology/oncology fellowship at NYU Langone Hospital–Long Island. She is proud to serve as an advocate for her patients during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives and is committed to supporting their physical, emotional, and overall well-being.

Dr. Huang is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Society of Hematology and is excited to contribute to the continued growth of cancer care at Maimonides Cancer Center.

Meet Danny P**n, MD, a Bariatric and General Surgeon at Maimonides Medical Center.

Dr. P**n earned his medical degree from Drexel University College of Medicine, completed his General Surgery residency at Stony Brook University Hospital, and pursued advanced fellowship training in Minimally Invasive Bariatric Surgery at NYU Langone Hospital–Long Island. His practice focuses on minimally invasive and robotic surgical techniques, helping patients achieve safe, effective outcomes with faster recovery times.

A native New Yorker, Dr. P**n is proud to serve his hometown community. He is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and serves on the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) Publication Committee.

At the Miami Breast Cancer Conference on March 5, Dr. Patrick Borgen, who serves as Chair of the meeting, and Dr. Joshua Feinberg took the stage as part of a landmark gathering that brought together more than 2,000 registrants from 53 countries, featuring 120 lectures and debates led by 40 international experts.

With 20 members of the Maimonides team in attendance, it was an incredible opportunity to share knowledge, collaborate with global leaders, and continue advancing breast cancer care for patients everywhere.
