Mayor de Blasio recently unveiled a proposal to significantly expand access to health care for city residents without insurance. Left out of this plan, and often overlooked in the larger discussion about increasing healthcare coverage, is our teeth. And our gums, for that matter.

Park Slope and it’s people will always hold a special place in my heart. It is where I started my dental hygiene career, where I became confident in my craft, where stories were shared and friendships were made. I am so grateful for Park Slope Dentistry and the people in the neighborhood for allowing me to be their dental hygienist for the past 8 years. As this chapter in my career closes, another one begins. I am so excited to be joining a new practice close to home and serving the Bensonhurst community.

I also want to give recognition to these two special ladies in this picture taken tonight at dinner.
• Dr. Ho is one of the most brilliant people I know. She has taught me so much about dentistry through the years and to always set a high standard of care.
• Denise has been my mentor from the moment I met her. She is an incredible hygienist and she has shown me, through example, the hygienist I should be. She might not know this but I credit a lot of my passion for dental hygiene to her. Congratulations on your retirement, Denise!

I am so fortunate to have met such amazing individuals throughout my career in which I can call friends. I can only wish to continue to be this lucky for the rest of my career.

I cringe whenever I hear a person say or read a review that said they had a “fast and easy” cleaning. Why? Because fast and easy might not necessary be what’s warranted to give you the best comprehensive preventative treatment.

When getting a dental prophylaxis (cleaning), look for a hygienist or dentist that is thorough and spends the time on educating you on how to keep your teeth and gums healthy. Your visit should at least include:
•Dental x-rays, if you are due (to detect cavities in areas not visible to the naked eye)
•An oral cancer screening
•Dental cleaning to rid of harmful bacterial plaque and calculus
•Probing/periodontal charting (to detect periodontal disease)
•Cavity detection
•Polishing to remove surface stains
•Oral hygiene instructions and any other recommendations on how to keep your teeth and gums in tip top shape.

There are times when fast and easy is applicable - mostly if you are someone that is diligent with your home care of brushing at least 2x a day for 2 minutes each time and flossing daily using the proper tools and techniques. A maintenance visit at least every 6 months will also help make your time at the dentist as pleasant as possible.

It’s a rarity when one of us actually gets to be the patient with how busy we get. One of our assistants finally got a chance to get her cleaning today by yours truly. Starting off with an oral cancer screening.
