Reaching out for help is a natural action when one is in immediate physical danger. When a Firefighter falls through a floor during a structure response, he radios & reaches up for help for his Brothers & Sisters to pull him out. When Cops respond to a call and there are shots fired, they call for backup to eliminate the threat. When an EMT & Paramedic have to start administering CPR, they call for backup to assist with working the code in attempts to save a life. When a 9-1-1 Dispatcher takes that soul wrenching call and simultaneously works to get the pertinent details from the caller, comfort the caller and get lights & sirens rolling, their words and tone of their voice during that call are all that’s needed to reach out for the support of one of their Brothers & Sisters putting a hand on their shoulder or if they are taking a call, sending them the energy, love & strength needed to get through that call.

Reaching out for help is a purposeful, decisive action. Reaching out for help is an action of strength, of perseverance. In Public Safety, reaching out for help is often a hard, fast action of survival.

So why the stigma when it comes to reaching out for the help of emotional support? We need to be at our best mind, body & soul to be able to effectively answer the calls for help of others. Take the decisive, purposeful action of strength and REACH OUT for help when you are in emotional danger.
