DID YOU KNOW?

With cold and flu season fast approaching. Did you know that some of the liquid medications you may take, may be harmful to your teeth?

Many cough syrups contain ingredients such as high fructose corn syrup and sucrose. If taken frequently, or during the night these sugars could encourage the growth of cavity causing bacteria.

Another ingredient that some cough syrups contain is Citric Acid. Frequent exposure to Citric Acid is known to cause wear to tooth enamel, making your teeth more susceptible to tooth decay over time.

In addition to the sugars and acid contained in some of these medications, alcohol content is also quite high. Alcohol can have a drying effect on your mouth by inhibiting the saliva production that your mouth needs to help clean the cough syrup off of your teeth.

We recommend that you take these medications in pill form when available. If pill form is not available, we recommend brushing immediately after taking the medicine, or, at the very least, drink 8oz of water to help rinse it away.

DID YOU KNOW?

Are your teeth feeling sensitive? If your teeth are sensitive while brushing or drinking cold liquids, you may be suffering from condition called Dentin Hypersensitivity.

Dentin Hypersensitivity is commonly caused by receding gums due to aggressive brushing or incorrect brushing motion; such as scrubbing back and forth instead of up and down or in a circular motion. We recommend brushing with a "sensitive" toothpaste such as Sensodyne.

If sensitivity persist, please call our office @610-359-8181. We have an effective new product called "Sensi-stop Strips" that, when applied to the affected area, prevents sensitivity for up to one month.

DID YOU KNOW?

When purchasing a toothbrush, what type of toothbrush bristle does your dentist recommend?

Most dentist recommend using a soft bristle toothbrush. When removing plaque from your teeth, a soft toothbrush is all you need. Plaque is the consistency of apple sauce and can be easily removed using soft bristles. Using a medium or hard toothbrush will not get your teeth any cleaner. Studies have shown that hard bristles can cause damage to the gums, leading to gum recession and subsequently, to the exposure of the roots of your teeth. This can result in sensitivity, and root cavities over time.

If you brush gently, often, and effectively, your teeth and gums will reward you for years to come!

DID YOU KNOW?

Do you floss your teeth regularly or only when you have some food impacted between your teeth?

Flossing once a day, will greatly reduce your risk of inter-proximal caries, gingivitis, and periodontitis.

Bacteria between our teeth live and work in organized colonies that are destroyed everytime we floss. These colonies require 24 hours to rebuild. Therefore, if you floss EVERDAY, the bacteria must spend all of it's time and energy rebuilding and are effectively neutralized as the cause of cavities and gum disease.

Happy Brushing and Flossing :)
