A case for Work Conditioning or Work Hardening:
There are many motivational factors that can limit an injured employee's return to work. One very common and underappreciated factors is fear. Fear of re-entering the environment where the injury occurred, fear of poor performance leading to being fired or loss of reputation among coworkers, and fear of worsening of symptoms after accepting return to work and case closure, and fear of giving up a newly adopted lifestyle which can include things such as childcare.
One effective way to alleviate these fears is to reintroduce the employee to the former work duties in a gradual and controlled manner. This is the role of work conditioning/work hardening. The process begins with getting up every morning and "going to work." These programs are most effective when the activities most closely simulate the employees actual work duties, and in an environment similar to their work environment. In a short time, most employees are confronted with the reality that indeed they can perform their former work duties with none of their prior fears realized.
There is a great disparity between sitting at home in the AC and attending therapy for 3 hours a week, to reporting for work 8-12 hours a day for 5-7 days a week in a non-climate-controlled environment.
Work conditioning/Work hardening programs are best started as soon as the physician feels the employee medically should be able to return to work, but the employee is resistant for any number of reasons. Otherwise, the employee will become more adapted to the injured/disabled role and further separated from the role of productive worker/employee.

Its been 2 months since Dawn and I purchased and took over operations of CWR. The move was daunting to say the least. We continue to work diligently to get this facility world class. We are seeing some light at the end of the tunnel now. But we are committed to continuing to pursue excellence. We hope all those we service feel they are getting the maximum for their money spent.

CWR is an industrial rehabilitation facility specializing in FCE(functional capacity evaluations), Work Hardening/Work Conditioning, Post Hire, and Fit for duty testing. It was established in 1987 by Paul Fontana and changed ownership in 2023. We are located in a 7000 sq. ft. Facility with a truck simulator, drill floor and derrick simulator, 12’ climbing structure, 9’ stair case, shoveling bin, and much more. Our FCE and post hire tests are designed with simulation very close to or exactly like real life work activities. We perform very thorough and in depth medical history documentation , safety training, and musculoskeletal assessments in addition to physical performance testing to help reduce employer liability and better protect employers investment in their employees.
