STONEWALLING AND GHOSTING: DEEPLY PAINFUL HARM FROM THE SILENT TREATMENT. Our new article on Stonewalling, Ghosting, & Ostracism goes over the experience of the person on the receiving end of the "silent treatment" as well as the psychology of the person doing the stonewalling. It's a painful experience on both ends, with the recipient left wondering what he or she has done to "deserve" that. Few interpersonal experiences are as painful and destabilizing as being deliberately ignored by someone who matters to you. This can last for a day, a week, or indefinitely. Today people often use the term ghosting when someone suddenly stops responding to calls, texts, emails, or social media messages.
In couples research, John Gottman used the term stonewalling to describe a pattern in which one person withdraws or refuses meaningful engagement. Whether briefly or indefinitely, where it happens in a marriage, a friendship, a parent-child relationship, or after a breakup, the emotional impact can be profound. It's the opposite of repair and dialogue.

THE ULTIMATE PEOPLE-PLEASER: New Article in Science on AI Sychophancy, Hallucination, and Confirmation Bias!

Read our preliminary Guidance on AI for therapy.

An article in Science (Cheng et al 2026) this week highlights some of the dangers with AI, notably sycophancy and hallucination. In the AI universe, Sycophancy is agreeableness, people-pleasing, and confirmation of the user’s point of view, almost flattery. The researchers add a new dimension as they compared AI answers to certain ethical or life problems to human wisdom, namely asking Reddit subscribers for advice on the same dilemma. About half the time, AI tended to confirm the questioner’s beliefs and attitudes without challenge even when they diverged from the collective ethical wisdom of the Reddit respondents. The researchers looked Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Meta’s Llama, Deep/seek, and other platforms. The tendency of these platforms is to confirm or support the user agreeably even when the user’s question might be about harmful, irresponsible, and unethical behavior. Due to confirmation bias, the user feels affirmed rather than challenged.

Using chatbots for therapy and friendship is fraught with challenges and downsides. These bots were not designed for these purposes. We see 'horror' stories in which bots give suicidal people advice to keep secrecy and even how one may su***de. They may encourage inappropriate thinking by validating what should not be validated. Here is some preliminary guidance.

On the other hand, there are AI applications specifically designed by psychotherapists for CBT and therapeutic interactions. Learn more about it at this link or at https://shorehavenbhi.com/articles.php

Anxiety is one of the most common mental health concerns people face today. While occasional worry is a normal part of life, persistent anxiety can interfere with relationships, work performance, and daily functioning.

Individuals experiencing anxiety may notice:

Constant worry or racing thoughts

Difficulty relaxing or sleeping

Panic attacks or physical tension

Avoidance of certain situations or environments

Evidence-based treatments such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), mindfulness practices, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) can help individuals identify anxious thought patterns and develop healthier coping strategies. Many clients benefit from learning how thoughts, emotions, and behaviors interact, allowing them to interrupt cycles of worry and regain a sense of control.

With professional guidance, people often develop practical skills for emotional regulation, stress management, and improved resilience.
