Life at Thornton Oaks is as varied and diverse as our residents, who are instrumental in planning and shaping community events. The calendar is filled with daily activities, from book groups and bridge parties to foreign affairs lectures and flower arranging. The Thornton Oaks shuttle bus makes frequent trips to the Bowdoin College pool and local shopping centers, as well as cultural excursions to Portland and Boston.

At Thornton Oaks it’s not the snow removal goes away; it’s just that somebody else takes care of it. How grateful we are for our facilities team who work late at night, early in the morning, on Christmas Eve, whatever it takes to keep our roadways, parkjng lots and sidewalks clear. It takes a while to clear almost 14 inches of snow. Excellent work guys! Thank you!

A few years ago during the pandemic, Jan came up with a very creative way to celebrate the holidays while observing social distancing and other safety protocols. It was a cookie swap where cookie donations were made and collected in a timed fashion. The cookie swap is now a beloved annual tradition at Thornton Oaks.  Scrumptious cookies are donated and collected by residents and staff alike.  Though we are very good at eating cookies, we are even better at baking them. As a result we’re able to bring hundreds of cookies to the Gathering Place. This warm, welcoming, daytime destination provides shelter, comfort and hope for our neighbors facing homelessness.

Earlier this week, the Thornton Oaks Singers presented their annual Holiday Concert. Director Beth Harmon and Accompanist Janet Davis lead 22 residents through a variety of Holiday favorites including including a sing-along. The sweet music from various historical and religious traditions  reminded us of our upbringing. The singers are especially grateful to Diana, Matile and Jan for their gifts of music.

We are pleased to welcome Joel Pierce and Sarah Oeste  who are currently performing piano four hand in the Merrymeeting room. This style of piano duet is played with four hands on the same piano simultaneously. Both Ms. Oeste and Mr. Pierce are piano instructors and performers in Mid Coast Maine. We are grateful for their holiday concert!
