Overall, colore**al cancer is declining in the United States. That’s because more people are being screened for it, and screening tests can catch precancerous polyps that can be removed before they turn cancerous.

But it’s older people who are driving that decline. The rate of colore**al cancer is rising in adolescents and young adults and it’s not clear why. Link in bio to learn what symptoms you should watch for.

Dr. Jessica Langbaum, senior director of Alzheimer’s prevention and research for Banner Health, was recently featured in an Associated Press article examining the latest research on brain exercises.

The article highlights a study by a neuropsychologist at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago which followed nearly 2,000 older adults for eight years. The research found that lifelong learning — including activities like reading, learning languages, playing chess and visiting museums — was associated with a lower risk of Alzheimer's disease. Those with the highest levels of cognitive stimulation developed Alzheimer's five years later than those with the least.

The study suggests that mental stimulation builds "cognitive reserve," helping the brain work around damage from aging or disease.

Dr. Langbaum, who was not involved with the study, advises that people choose activities that help them "think on their feet," such as joining book clubs that combine reading with discussion and social connection. The article also emphasizes that brain health requires a holistic approach, including physical exercise, cardiovascular health management, quality sleep and vaccination.

Colore**al cancer is more common than many people realize — and early detection can save lives. Colore**al cancer begins in the colon or re**um, which are parts of the large intestine. It often starts as small growths called polyps that can become cancer over time if they aren’t removed. The challenge? Early stages may not cause noticeable symptoms, which is why routine screening is so important.

Colon cancer and re**al cancer are often grouped together as colore**al cancer, since they have many features in common. Here’s what you should know.
