Krill Funeral Service

Krill Funeral Service Krill Funeral Service provides full service funerals, on-site cremation and pet services to the Northwest Ohio, Northeast Indiana and Southern Michigan area.

Home of the Funeral Doods. We believe that if anyone, or any firm, serves long enough, he will succeed or fail depending on the policy he pursues. In the course of experiencing your faith in us through a century, we have developed a creed that is very sacred to us as we serve you. Each final statement we present to all we serve carries this sentiment. We wish to express to you our sincere sympathy in a time of loss as well as our appreciation for your trust in us. It is our purpose to give you thoughtful service, and if in doing so we have lightened your burden, our aim has been accomplished. We sincerely hope that our service has been deserving of your confidence. We want all to know that this measure of gratitude for our success is always foremost in our thoughts and that your confidence is, and always will be, our sacred trust.

Whether you celebrate Easter or not, its story still speaks to something universal: that love is not undone by loss, and hope can still rise in its place.

Today, we hope you’re gathered around a table and sharing a beautiful meal, surrounded by unconditional love. 🤍

Good Friday reminds us of the middle of the story, where loss is real, answers haven’t come yet, and love is still holding everything together.

For anyone walking through grief, that space can feel deeply familiar.

We wrote something about what Good Friday can teach us about love, loss, and staying present in our grief. Read now: krillfuneralservice.com/good-friday

During the American Civil War, many families never had the chance to say goodbye. Their loved ones were simply too far from home.

That began to change with Dr. Thomas Holmes, often called the father of embalming, who advanced embalming techniques that made it possible to bring soldiers home.

One of the first widely recognized examples was Abraham Lincoln. His body traveled by train across the country, allowing thousands to pay their respects.

As of today, Oakley and Bentley will be retiring as therapy dogs and assuming all roles at the funeral home, including but not limited to: funeral director, mortician, office manager, and phone receptionist.

We appreciate your patience as they transition into these roles. (They don't have opposable thumbs, so there will be a learning curve.)

As Women’s History Month comes to a close, we’ve been reflecting on the women whose stories we’ve had the honor to share.

Henrietta Bowers Duterte
Lina D. Odou
Claire Collins Harvey
Hattie Mae Blessing

Each of them of them made their own way, shaping funeral service through leadership, courage, and a deep commitment to her community.

Their work looked different, but the heart of it was the same: showing up for others in moments that matter most.

That legacy continues today in funeral homes everywhere, including right here in our own.

To the women who came before, and the women carrying this work forward — thank you. 🤍

Do you know why smell is the strongest sense for evoking memory?

It’s the only sense with a direct pathway to the amygdala and hippocampus, the brain’s emotion and memory centers. Unlike sight or sound, smell isn't filtered first. It goes straight to the parts of the brain that process feeling and experience.

That’s why a specific scent can instantly bring you back to a moment, a place, or a person, even after many years. ♥️

In the mid-20th century, funeral homes in Black communities were often more than places of mourning. They were gathering spaces, planning rooms, and quiet centers of strength where people organized, shared news, and supported one another at a time when segregation shaped nearly every aspect of daily life.

In Jackson, Mississippi, one of those places was run by Claire Collins Harvey.

Harvey was a funeral director, business owner, and civic leader during the height of the Civil Rights era. Funeral service gave her a unique role in the community. Families trusted her during their most difficult moments, and that trust extended beyond the funeral home doors.

She understood that this trust and leadership meant using the influence she had to help others move forward. Through her business and community involvement, Harvey supported local organizing, helped create opportunities for Black women in business, and became a respected voice for progress during a time when those voices were often ignored or worse, silenced.

Past and future funeral directors have long been community anchors. They care for the dead, yes, but they also stand beside the living, especially in moments when leadership and compassion matter most.
