Each Monday in February we will feature an African American medical professional who paved the way for others to work in the field. Dr. James McCune Smith was the first African American to hold a medical degree. He had to attend school outside the United States at the University of Glasgow in Scotland because he was prohibited from receiving a medical degree in the United States because of his race. .
