The Association for Comprehensive Energy Psychology

The Association for Comprehensive Energy Psychology ACEP is a nonprofit of licensed, allied health practitioners dedicated to energy psychology.

Energy Psychology (EP) is a family of evidence supported modalities that balance, restore and improve human functioning by combining physical interventions (using the acupuncture system, the chakras and other ancient systems of healing) with modern cognitive interventions such as imagery-based exposure therapy.

Feeling confused, scattered, or out of sync? 🌀

The Cross Crawl is a simple, movement-based technique that can help “unscramble” the system and support better coordination and focus. This practice is commonly taught in Brain Gym® by Paul Dennison and Gail Dennison, and also shared within energy medicine by Donna Eden.

As part of ACEP’s Resources for Resilience (R4R), Cross Crawl may help:
• improve left–right hemispheric communication
• support focus and mental clarity 🧠
• increase coordination and body awareness
• restore a sense of balance and organization
• help you feel more connected and confident

This rhythmic, cross-body movement is easy to do anywhere—and can be especially helpful when things feel overwhelming or disorganized.

What if your dreams could help guide your clinical work?

In this ACEP Blog article, Larry Burk, MD, CEHP, explores how dreamwork and Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) can be combined to deepen insight and support healing.

Key ideas explored in the article:
• dreams as a window into nonconscious patterns and emotional imprints
• using dream themes to guide tapping sessions
• understanding symptoms as meaningful signals—not just problems to fix
• integrating intuition, imagery, and energy systems like chakras into the process 🧠
• supporting clients in uncovering deeper layers of meaning and resolution

For practitioners, incorporating dreamwork can offer another pathway to understanding what may be driving patterns beneath the surface—and how to address them effectively.

What kinds of change can energy psychology support—in clinical work and beyond?

Energy psychology (also known as cognitive somatic practices) combines cognitive approaches with body-based techniques that help regulate the nervous system and address stress where it’s stored. These methods are increasingly used to support meaningful transformation across multiple areas of life and practice.

Here are four ways energy psychology can facilitate transformational change:
• resolving trauma, anxiety, and other clinical concerns
• supporting greater ease and flow in work and daily life
• improving performance in the arts, sports, school, and business 🎯
• strengthening connection, clarity, and emotional wellbeing

As Anthony Tranguch, MD, PhD shared after integrating these methods into practice:
“I made more progress with patients in a session or two than I had in several years of treating them.”

Energy psychology approaches are designed to integrate with existing clinical methods while offering practical tools that clinicians—and clients—can use both in and between sessions.

What if therapist self-care included working directly with the body’s natural stress-release mechanisms?

In her upcoming pre-conference workshop, Kate E. Munden will introduce TRE® (Tension & Trauma Release Exercises) as a practical, somatic approach to restoring regulation, resilience, and embodied safety—especially for clinicians supporting others through trauma work.

TRE® Trauma Release Exercises: Essential Self-Care for Therapists (6 CE Hours | Intermediate/Advanced) explores how practitioners can:
• understand the neurophysiology of neurogenic tremors within a polyvagal-informed framework
• learn trauma-sensitive pacing for dissociation-prone clients
• experience the full TRE® protocol: grounding, activation, tremor, integration, and reflection
• apply TRE® as both a personal self-care discipline and a clinical adjunct to therapy and energy psychology
• support resolution of fight, flight, freeze, and dissociation responses—sometimes when words aren’t enough

As Kate shares in the reel, many therapists discover at ACEP that healing can include body-based pathways—not just conversation.

Chronic pain affects roughly 1 in 5 adults—and research continues to explore how mind-body approaches can support meaningful relief.

A randomized clinical trial published in The European Journal of Pain examined Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) and found significant reductions in pain severity along with improvements in quality of life after a 6-week intervention. Outcomes were maintained at 6-month follow-up, with strong results in both live and self-paced formats.

Study highlights include:
• 147 participants with chronic pain
• measurable improvements in pain severity
• improved quality-of-life indicators
• sustained outcomes at follow-up
• effectiveness across both guided and self-paced delivery formats

These findings add to the growing body of research supporting EFT as an accessible, integrative tool for pain-related care.

“Some changes look negative on the surface but you will soon realize that space is being created in your life for something new to emerge.” — Eckhart Tolle

Transitions can feel uncomfortable—especially when familiar patterns shift. But from an energy psychology perspective, change often reflects movement within the mind–body system as it reorganizes, releases stored stress responses, and makes room for new possibilities.

Practices that support nervous system regulation, awareness of present-moment experience, and gentle engagement with emotional imprints can help clients (and practitioners) stay grounded while change unfolds.

Sometimes what looks like disruption is actually integration in progress. 🌿

What if some of the patterns clients struggle with aren’t “stuck in the past”—but active imprints in the mind-body-energy system that can shift more efficiently than expected?

In his pre-conference workshop, Alfred Heath, MA, LPC, will introduce the latest evolution of Be Set Free Fast™ 3.0, an integrative approach developed from the work of Larry Nims that brings together energy psychology with contemporary clinical frameworks.

Be Set Free Fast 3.0: Integrative Energy Psychology of the Future (6 CE Hours | Level: All) explores how this method may help practitioners:
• address non-conscious contributing factors linked to stress and trauma patterns
• support shifts using simple cue-based processes (word, image, or gesture)
• integrate principles from cognitive neuroscience and polyvagal theory 🧠
• connect BSFF with evidence-based psychotherapy approaches including CBT, exposure-based methods, ACT, and motivational interviewing
• strengthen practical tools for supporting memory reconsolidation and self-regulation in clinical work

Whether you’re new to BSFF—or ready to deepen your existing training—this experiential session offers tools you can begin integrating right away.

▶️ Watch Alfred’s explainer video in the reel to learn what makes this updated approach especially relevant for today’s clinicians.

Can long-held trauma responses shift more quickly than we once thought possible?

A Phase 1 study explored Heart Assisted Therapy (HAT)—an integrative energy psychology approach combining breathing, cognition, imaginal exposure, intention, mindfulness, and “heart holding.” Participants had lived with distressing experiences for an average of 18 years, yet many reported substantial reductions in distress within just a few sessions.

Key highlights from the study:
• addressed 81 traumatic or troubling life events across participants
• average treatment time: about 3–4 sessions per event
• significant reductions in distress scores
• results largely maintained at follow-up months later
• included both civilian participants and combat veterans

While additional research is needed, findings suggest HAT may be a promising approach for working with longstanding trauma imprints in the mind–body system.
