The Association for Comprehensive Energy Psychology

The Association for Comprehensive Energy Psychology ACEP is a nonprofit of licensed, allied health practitioners dedicated to energy psychology.

Energy Psychology (EP) is a family of evidence supported modalities that balance, restore and improve human functioning by combining physical interventions (using the acupuncture system, the chakras and other ancient systems of healing) with modern cognitive interventions such as imagery-based exposure therapy.

Recovery from addiction isn’t just about willpower.

In this thoughtful new blog, Mark Bottinick explains why getting sober can feel like an internal tug-of-war—with forces pulling toward sobriety, pulling toward relief through substance use, and even pushing away from change itself.

Energy psychology offers practical ways to work directly with these learned emotional patterns—helping reduce cravings, ease internal resistance, and support lasting shifts that make sobriety feel more natural and sustainable over time.

If you or someone you support is navigating recovery, this perspective can help make sense of what’s happening beneath the surface—and what can help.

Curious about how energy psychology compares to conventional therapy approaches? 🤔

Both offer valuable paths to healing—but they work in different ways.

Conventional talk therapy and approaches like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy often focus on exploring thoughts, emotions, and behaviors through conversation and cognitive reframing.

Energy psychology, on the other hand, takes a more holistic approach. It engages thoughts, emotions, the physical body, and the body’s energy systems in the same session—often leading to shifts that feel both experiential and immediate.

Techniques such as Emotional Freedom Techniques, Thought Field Therapy, and Advanced Integrative Therapy help clients work through emotional distress by addressing deeper patterns and the underlying causes of their experiences.

Another unique aspect of energy psychology is identifying and resolving internal resistance—sometimes called “reversals”—that can lead to self-sabotage or difficulty making progress toward goals.

And importantly, many practitioners blend energy psychology with conventional therapy methods, creating a well-rounded, integrative approach to healing.

Learning happens best when your mind and body are both engaged.

That’s why the International Energy Psychology Conference includes experiential sessions and movement breaks designed to help you restore energy, regulate your nervous system, and integrate what you’re learning.

Throughout the conference, you’ll have opportunities to participate in:

🌿 Morning energizers like meditation, vagal movement, and laughter yoga
🌿 Movement experiences such as Tai Chi and connection-based practices
🌿 Interactive learning sessions that combine theory with real-world application

Looking for simple ways to boost your therapy results? ✨

Energy psychology offers powerful tools — and sometimes the smallest tweaks can make a big difference. This ACEP blog highlights four simple techniques that can help reduce distress, rebalance the energy system, and support faster shifts for clients.

Inside, you’ll learn about:
🔹 Tapping the finger points to access additional meridians
🔹 The 9-Gamut technique to help reduce emotional intensity
🔹 The Brief Energy Correction to rebalance a scrambled energy system
🔹 Collarbone breathing to help restore energetic balance and calm the nervous system

These practical tools are easy to learn, easy to use, and can help enhance the effectiveness of energy psychology techniques like EFT and other tapping approaches. 🧠💫

When anxiety rises, simple body-based techniques can help bring your nervous system back into balance. 🦋

The Butterfly Hug is a gentle self-soothing practice that can help calm emotional distress and reconnect you with the present moment. It was originated and developed by Lucina Artigas while supporting survivors of Hurricane Pauline in Acapulco, Mexico.

Try this simple practice when you feel anxious:

🦋 Butterfly Hug

1️⃣ Cross your arms, placing your hands on your upper arms
2️⃣ Alternate tapping your palms like the wings of a butterfly
3️⃣ Close or soften your eyes and take deep, calming breaths
4️⃣ Focus on what’s present in your body and mind
5️⃣ Repeat until you begin to feel more relaxed

Many people experience feeling calmer, more balanced, and more connected after practicing this technique.

“Your treasure — your perfection — is within you already. But to claim it, you must leave the busy commotion of the mind and abandon the desires of the ego and enter into the silence of the heart.” — Elizabeth Gilbert

The mind is loud.
The heart is quiet.

Energy psychology reminds us that healing and transformation often happen when we step out of constant mental activity and reconnect with the body, breath, and deeper awareness.

Practices like tapping, mindful breathing, and other mind-body techniques can help calm the internal noise so we can access a steadier, wiser place within.

The insight, resilience, and compassion we’re seeking may already be there — waiting beneath the surface.

Can energy psychology help transform lives inside the criminal justice system?

In this ACEP blog, Lori Chortkoff Hops, PhD, DCEP highlights the powerful impact of the HARP (Helping Addicts Recover Progressively) program at the Chesterfield County Jail.

The program integrates energy psychology tapping to support individuals struggling with addiction, trauma, and stress. Participants learn practical tools to regulate their nervous systems, manage emotional triggers, and build healthier coping skills — both during incarceration and after release.

The results are inspiring:
• Strong community and peer support among participants
• Millions of views on viral “Tapping Tuesday” videos
• Expanding programs that support recovery and reduce recidivism

The blog also explores how approaches like the Trauma Tapping Technique, developed by Gunilla Hamne and Ulf Sandström of the Peaceful Heart Network, are being used globally to support trauma healing in challenging environments.

It’s a powerful example of how mind-body approaches can create meaningful change in individuals, systems, and communities.

The Balance Hook Up is a simple mind-body technique designed to help calm agitation, quiet the mind, and bring you back into balance.

Developed by Wayne Cook and widely taught by Donna Eden, this technique works by helping balance the left and right hemispheres of the brain while supporting a calmer nervous system.

People often report feeling:
✨ More relaxed
✨ More centered and grounded
✨ More connected and “back in their body”

It only takes a few minutes and can be used anytime you need to reset.

🧠 Is the amygdala really the brain’s “fear center”?

In this ACEP blog, Robert Schwarz, DCEP, PsyD explores insights from neuroscientist Joseph LeDoux and examines how modern neuroscience aligns with what many practitioners observe in energy psychology sessions.

Research suggests that the amygdala may not create the feeling of fear itself. Instead, it helps detect potential threats and mobilize the body’s response. The conscious emotion of fear is actually constructed through a much more complex process involving memory, perception, and attention.

This perspective helps explain why energy psychology techniques can be so powerful in trauma work. When the nervous system stops detecting threat from a memory, the body no longer mobilizes a fear response — even when the memory remains.

No threat detection → no body response → no fear.

It’s a fascinating look at how neuroscience, memory reconsolidation, and energy psychology may intersect.
