Wrote a poem today…perhaps you’ll enjoy it. ❤️

PERHAPS

Perhaps, when I don’t know how to pray,
I could just sing the alphabet.
It contains every prayer that I could ever say or cipher.

Perhaps, then, the Wise One, who hears my song will smile
at my humbly creative and imprecise supplication.
Perhaps, She will discern my need to be hugged, or heard, or helped
and respond accordingly.

Perhaps, She will return the same melody of my song with
twinkling “little stars” and revise the question to:
“...how I wonder what you’re saying?”

More likely, perhaps, She will respond with Her own Divine Alphabet -
made up of all that is around and within me -
much like my own alphabet of possibilities only
more expansive and infinite.

Perhaps, in time, I will discern Her wisdom in…
…the soliloquy of my Inner Voice,
…the budding hopes of the snowdrops and croci tamped down with snow,
…the five deer running east…

…Perhaps

Empathy for a Garbage Can

No one understood why I cried that day…but I did.
At first, I cried so that my tears could be seen, but
she belittled me for what she perceived as meaningless sorrow, and
I took them inside – my tears and my thoughts and
There they’ve stayed with my memory of you.

But, when I close my eyes, even today some 55 years later,
I still see you by the side of the road.
You were small, and dented, and rusty in spots, and
I knew, even at such a tender age, that your life had been a journey that took you from
Being a shining beauty to something that would soon be mistaken for trash.
What I didn’t know then was that, I, too, felt like that.

I know now that that is why I cried when they took you away;
It’s a fearful thing to be mistaken for trash, but
That is the secret we shared –
Only your wounds showed on the outside.

Your gift to me was that we shared
the commonality of wounding that happens to everyone on the journey, and
I hope that, wherever you are now,
you know I cried for you that day and
My wounds, like yours,
add to my shining, dented, rusty beauty.

There’s A little Firecracker Within You

REMEMBER HER?

Somewhere inside of you,
there’s a little firecracker with her arms folded and a frown on her face.
She isn’t happy about all the times you said no when you wanted to say yes.
All the times you said yes when you wanted to say no.
She wanted you to buy the ticket.
She wanted you to take that trip.
She definitely wanted you to take that risk,
the one that may have just opened a whole new world.
She wants you to remember what it feels like to run to the sea without a care in the world and splash and laugh till you ache. To face the day without a fear in your heart and embrace every opportunity that comes.
She doesn’t understand why you won’t wear the bikini.
She doesn’t understand why you won’t eat the cake.
She doesn’t understand why you don’t let it go.
She definitely doesn’t understand why you accept second best.
Somewhere inside there is a little girl who wonders at the adult you’ve become..
She still has many things she wants to learn and so many people still to meet.
She still has food she’d like to taste and parties she wants to dance at.
She still has places she wants to visit and wonders she wants to stare at.
Somewhere inside you, there is a little firecracker, desperate to see more of this thing we call life.
Go get her, she’s fun.
