✨🪴THE HERB OF THE MONTH: THYME🪴✨ Thymus vulgaris (Common Thyme)

One of the beautiful things about herbs is that they are small but mighty little plants. Pleasant to the eyes, easy on the senses, and versatile in usages. Take thyme for example: This herb has been found in gardens, kitchens, apothecaries, vanities, and even Egyptian embalming rooms for centuries upon centuries.

In the ancient and medieval worlds, thyme was associated with courage and valor. Thyme infused oil was massaged into the muscles of Greek and Roman soldiers before facing battle. During the age of knights in armor, noblewomen would give their knights scarves either embroidered with images of the herb or having actual sprigs sewn into the fabric as tokens of favor and good fortune before a jousting match.

Medicinally, thyme has been used as a cough suppressant throughout history and still is today (check the cough syrup in your medicine cabinet for “thymol”). It is also a powerful antiseptic and antioxidant and, being such, is a multi-useful element to add to homemade cleaners and skin care. The herb leaves can also be added to food or made as a tea, not only for taste, with its bittersweet, earthy flavoring, but also for its inflammation reducing properties.

In the garden, thyme attracts and feeds the pollinators while helping to keep pests away. And being a lover of sunshine, a little water, and rocky soil due to its Mediterranean roots, thyme is easy to grow in planters without too much maintenance. Some varieties even make lovely ground cover. So, it’s a great herb for any level of gardener.

“And though she be but little, she is fierce” (A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Act III, Scene II, Line 325).
