As our youth return to school and fall sports seasons resume, let's keep some perspective. Emotional maltreatment in high school athletics is an organizationally and systemically sanctioned form of abuse that negatively impacts the mental health of our kids.

Young athletes may experience:
• Denial of attention or support, such as intentionally ignoring an athlete for poor performance
• Name calling
• Insulting
• Shouting
• Belittling
• Threatening
• Humiliating
• Scapegoating
• Ignoring
• Rejecting
• Bullying
• Taunting
• Shunning
• Isolating
• Gaslighting
• Quick oscillation between praise and criticism
• Refusing to give corrections to the athlete
• Promoting disordered eating

I have observed some outrageous behaviors in recent years...from parents, from coaches, from administrators. Don't let your passion for the game or your passion to win prevent you from being a decent human being. In the end, the season will end. The records will fade. And the scars will be the only thing that remains.
