Positive Rabies Case Notification
On 2/20/2026 at 12:40pm, the Buda Police Department’s Animal Control Officer (ACO) was dispatched to the 600 block of Commercial Drive in Buda for a sick/injured skunk. The ACO collected the animal and, based on the circumstances, transported it to the San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter where they submitted it to the Department of State Health Services for testing.
This morning, 2/25/2026, the BPD ACO was notified the animal had a positive rabies result. The local businesses were provided physical notices in order to keep them informed. There has not been a report of human contact at this time.
While there has been a recent increase in cases in Hays County, this case is an isolated incident and is the first positive case within the city limits of Buda in recent history.
If you encounter an animal you believe to be infected, do not attempt to capture. Instead, keep an eye on it from a distance and call dispatch at (512) 393-7896.
Remember:
-Keep dogs, cats, and other pets up to date on rabies vaccinations as required by State Law and Buda City Ordinance.
-Avoid contact with wild or stray animals.
-If you’re bitten or scratched, wash the wound immediately and seek medical care right away.
-Report any animal acting strangely or aggressively to Animal Control by calling dispatch.
