Max Muncy decided to start wearing glasses mid season. He said it was worth a try- “anything that can help.” He has low astigmatism in the right eye and can pretty well without glasses. He got his first pair last month and at first felt a fishbowl effect with the glasses. It took him 1-2 weeks to get adjusted to his new vision and his stats have been on fire since wearing the glasses. His teammate K**e Hernandez did the same thing last year mid season. Both players note they are able to see the spin on the baseball and identify each pitch type faster. Let’s see if the trend continues for Max Muncy. Go Dodgers!

This week I attended Optometry’s Meeting in Nashville.. The 4-day conference offered 38 hours of continuing education with 187+ possible courses including topics of systemic disease, practice management, and gene therapy lectures. The meeting offered a huge Exhibit Hall with 150+ vendors, alumni receptions, hands-on workshops, and many networking opportunities. Nashville is nicknamed “The Music City” with many honky-tonks lining Broadway Street with live music where many famous singers got their start. Nashville is the state capitol, home to Vanderbilt University, and famous for their Hot Chicken. I’m looking forward to next year’s meeting in Minneapolis!

Every week I get a message like this from one our frame manufacturers or contact lens companies that says “due to high inflation there will be a 7% increase in goods and services”.

We will do our best to find products that can fit anybody’s budget in spite of these rising prices.

This week I attended the American Academy of Optometry annual meeting held in San Diego. This was the 100th anniversary of this organization! It was 4 day meeting with over 300+ hour of CEs to choose from and sometimes there were 16 different classes concurrently going. I wish I could be at two places at once. Attendees from all over the world attended with a record attendance of 9,000+ registrants. San Diego was the ideal place to host a conference with perfect weather, scenic waterfront views, and eclectic dining options especially in the Gaslamp Quarter and Little Italy. I am looking forward to next years meeting in New Orleans 2023!

Acuvue just launched a brand new version of their popular Oasys daily lens. This new product is called Acuvue Oasys Max 1-Day, and will be available in both sphere and multifocal (no astigmatism version expected until late 2023 or 2024) Acuvue Max is the first daily lens designed for combating digital eye strain. The average person spends 9 hours a day staring at screens.

To combat dry eye from less blinking, Acuvue Oasys Max has a new technology called Tearstable™. This technology spreads the contact's wetting agent across the entire surface of the contact lens to maintain moisture with reduced blinking. The lens also has Optiblue™ Light Filter which is blue light meant to reduce eyestrain. Currently there isn't strong evidence that blue light technology effective, but is still being researched.

I’m excited to offer this lens to patients and see how it compares to the 1 Day Oasys. The lens is currently priced at $936 for a year supply in the spherical version and comes with a $300 rebate.

This week I attended the 125th annual Optometrys Meeting (American Optometric Association) in Chicago June 15-18. The days were packed with continuing education with some days going from 7am-9pm totaling about 35 hours of credit. Lecture topics included dry eyes, glaucoma, diabetes, and myopia management. The weather was windy and hot with temperatures hitting 98 degrees. Thank you to the speakers, sponsors, vendors, and colleagues making the conference so successful. I look forward to next year’s meeting in Washington DC.

FDA approved Vuity (1.25% pilocarpine) to treat presbyopia (needing reading glasses)

Here are the quick facts:
1. Use one drop in each eye and it lasts for 6-10 hours
2. It works by constricting pupil therefore increasing depth of field (pinhole effect) decreasing need for reading glasses
3. It cost $79 for 1 month supply (2.5ml bottle)
4. Pilocarpine has been around for 100 years to treat glaucoma
5. It’s rarely used today to treat glaucoma
6. Generic forms exist in pilocarpine 1%, 2%, 4%
7. Vuity’s special ingredient is their propriety ingredient called “pHast technology” that allows it to adjust to the year film
8. Side effects include headache (15% of patients in study). Very rare side effect is retina detachment
