Understanding your child's emotions is the key to developing a meaningful parenting strategy. However, many young children often do not possess the vocabulary to adequately express their feelings. A great way to introduce emotions is through children's picture books. Reading these books with your child teaches them to identify and adequately cope with their feelings, leading them toward a better grasp of emotional regulation. My personal favorite books to start off this path on are The Pigeon Has Feelings, Too! by Mo Willems and The Crayons' Book of Feelings by Drew Daywalt and Oliver Jeffers. If your child is really struggling with their emotions, feel free to book an appointment using the link in our bio.

Impulsivity is the tendency to act without thinking and is one of the most challenging symptoms of mental illness. An example experienced is blurting things out that you had not planned to. However, impulsivity only becomes problematic when a regular pattern of restlessness, aggressive behavior, interrupting others, or being easily distracted occurs. If these behaviors are typical, it could be a sign of ADHD, Bipolar Disorder, and Antisocial Personality Disorder.
Aside from taking the steps in our post to manage impulsivity, seeking a mental health professional is often best. If you are looking for someone to help guide you on your path to impulse control, please make an appointment using our website.

Let's express gratitude for the mothers in our lives this Mother's Day. They are our first teachers, our moral compasses, and we must learn to express gratitude for these people who might often feel unnoticed. My mother and wife are two women who I admire deeply. I want to call them out for their immense contribution to my life and the lives of those around them.
If you know a mother anywhere- whether she be a human or pet mother- make sure you do an act of kindness for them today.

Spring often symbolizes new growth, and with that growth comes change. Change is often anxiety provoking and challenging to manage. With significant life changes often comes fallout- losing friendships, ends of relationships, moving houses. So, how do we cope with these things?
Holding onto some semblance of routine will be the best way to navigate this time, whether that means having the same cup of coffee or tea in the morning or watching "your show" at the end of the day. Additionally, you should seek support- lean on friends, coworkers, family members, and therapists.
Finally, as with all challenging times, finding the positives that accompany the change is essential. The small spots of light will train your brain to adjust to the change and, what's more, become more optimistic overall.

Forgiveness has been proven to alleviate cortisol levels in our bodies once practiced. This results in a lowered risk of heart attack and high blood pressure. People also experience less anxiety, depression, and stress. Forgiveness is a powerful emotion that, although we may not want to practice it, prepares us for healthier relationships later in life. While it is tempting to hold grudges, it is ultimately detrimental to our health and well-being to do so. By finding a trustworthy counselor or therapist, your road to forgiveness is already being paved.

Motivation drives us. It leads up to build relationships, achieve our dreams, and do our laundry. Without this drive, we fall into pits of anxiety and depression. The simplest form of motivation is often found in the tasks we complete daily (often without thinking of them as tasks). We get dressed, brush our teeth, and eat breakfast. However, the duties deemed "difficult" are often the hardest ones to motivate ourselves to accomplish.
Using the steps outlined in our post, you can train your brain to seek the rewarding feeling of completing these tasks. These tactics will condition your brain to desire to cross things off your mental checklists, offering a more satisfied outlook on life. For more motivation-related help, please book an appointment using the website in our bio!

In patients with anxiety, we often see what is known as the spotlight effect. This phenomenon often renders us frozen and detrimentally self-aware. I usually recommend my patients overcome this feeling by asking a trusted friend or family member if they notice the behaviors you are self-conscious of. Through this tactic, the anxious brain might be quieted down by logical reflection from others.
Another way to combat the spotlight effect is by asking yourself, "So?" after thinking of being judged. For example, if you drop your pencil in class and worry that everyone is looking at and evaluating you, you would ask yourself, "So?". This is another way to allow the anxious mindset to ground itself in reality.

Emerging adulthood is a period from ages 18-25 when young adults experience the job-searching, relationship-seeking portion of adulthood. This is an age group when the term 'launching' becomes relevant. These individuals feel immense pressure and anxiety to develop functional, financial, and psychological autonomy. In this stage of life, family systems shift, and young adults experience an identity crisis.
To successfully navigate this time, families must develop emotional distance (but avoid cutting each other off) and confront unresolved familial issues. Sometimes, these things require mediation. If you or someone you know might need help navigating emerging adulthood, book an appointment with us today!
