A disc herniation is a serious injury

So making the right choice(s) for yourself is a really important decision.

Iā€™m a researcher so I went ahead and dug into the number a little bit and this is what I found.

Single level microdiscecromies have about a 75-85% success rate at the 5 year mark.

Success defines as a lack of leg symptoms,

But back pain can come back in up to 40% or people.

As surgery increases in complexity it tends to decrease in long term effectiveness.

Something more serious and complicated like a spinal disc replacement has reported 63.3% effectiveness,

With a complication rate of just over 14%.

This complication rate is consistent with that of lumbar fusions, around 18%.

And donā€™t get me wrong, Iā€™m glad that spinal surgery is an optionā€¦

Sometimes, big injuries happen and itā€™s important to at least have an option for pain relief šŸ„²

But even the best surgeons will tell you that surgery needs to be a last option.

Thus, we need to focus on the principles of the FMT 360 Method for healing:

Static holds are a great way to build endurance without adding on a ton of weight or torsion to the spine.

Planks also works LOTS of core muscles and this šŸ”„ burn šŸ”„ lots of calories

When you are dealing with severe back pain and sciatica not much else matters.

Figuring out how to get relief from the pain becomes your primary goal.

And even just a little relief feels like a huge blessing šŸ™

In these moments there are only a few things that I tend to focus on to help people out of the darknessā€¦

Understand your pain triggers
Find your direction of preference
Control through the triangles of stability

Once you have these things down, simply rinse and repeat to consistently drop your pain levels over the next few days.

Donā€™t make it complicated.

Once you get to a 3/10 and your pain has come back up to the hip and lower back you are in a very good spot!

The most common back pain, recovery mistake can be easily avoided

bearing down and holding oneā€™s breath is so common that I had to make a video about it

However, this is more important than you think

Your breathing pattern has an immediate effect on your course ability and intra-abdominal pressure

It can either help you or hurt you so make sure to do it right

We had our first Arizona storm yesterday and it came on fast and furious!

Needless to say, we were caught by surprise but luckily not too far from home šŸ 

The water came gushing down and I was amazed at how quickly the scenery changed in the typically dry desert conditions.

The moment really had me thinking about how quickly these back pain episodes can come on ,

And how it can be so hard to know that there will be an end to it, especially when you were in the middle of the storm.

If this is you today, I want you to know that there will be an end and that this doesnā€™t have to be the ā€œnew normalā€.

As a traveling physical therapist I have seen the healthcare system work and fall apart all over the country.
