This week, Dr. Deepan Selvadurai performed cataract surgery on a patient with a dense, mature white cataract.

White Cataract Facts:
1. Patients with this condition often have vision reduced to hand-motion only.
2. These cases are considered high-risk due to limited visibility, increased intralenticular pressure, and a greater likelihood of capsular complications.

Despite the complexity, the procedure was completed successfully and without complication.

Post-operative Day 1:
The patient experienced a remarkable improvement in vision, achieving near legal driving acuity within 24 hours. This outcome reflects both the transformative potential of modern cataract surgery and the precision required in managing advanced cases.

Today was an exciting day at Buffalo Ophthalmology. Dr. Deepan Selvadurai became one of the first surgeons in New York State – and among the first in the United States – to implant the recently FDA approved Rayner RayOne EMV Toric intraocular lens.

This advanced lens is designed to provide both excellent distance vision and enhanced functional range, while also correcting astigmatism. For many patients, this means clearer, more natural vision with reduced dependence on glasses.

Dr. Selvadurai and the team are proud to continue bringing the latest innovations in cataract and refractive surgery to Western New York — ensuring that patients here have access to the same leading-edge technology available at major academic centers worldwide.

Having a lovely time at this year’s American Academy of Ophthalmology Annual Meeting. We are bringing back some new technology for our clinic (Pentacam camera) to help us enhance our corneal and cataract evaluations, new techniques and knowledge and I had a chance to touch base with some of my mentors and friends from around the country and abroad.

Today we got to be one of the first in the country to try out to OMNI edge. The version of the product that we tried is still in development but our feedback and study is helping contribute to the next generation of glaucoma surgical devices. Kudos to the folks at Sight Sciences for continuing to innovate in the glaucoma surgical space and for my awesome surgical team in the OR for supporting these developments.

An early morning in Chicago attending the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Annual meeting with Dr. Ausra Selvadurai. Always exciting to see all the new technology and affirming to see that what we are providing in Buffalo is leading edge care. Also got to drive by my medical internship Alma mater at Northwestern University, Feinberg School of medicine and my old apartments from my five years in Chicago during medical school and internship.

I had a fun day (a lot of flying in 24 hours) to head out to Dallas after a busy clinic to help redesign some new glaucoma devices. I had a chance to work on two new devices with engineers, scientists, regulatory specialists about how to redesign and help in the approval process with required FDA steps on one and the final design steps of a brand new device that is still a few years away from being available publically. I was fortunate to have built some new friendships and shared experiences with two other very talented surgeons who trained at the same institution where I completed my fellowship. I also had a lot of fun in the process! Science is cool! Currently on a plane heading back home to Buffalo, NY. Seeing all these Dallas Cowboy fans today forces me to end this post with a “Go Bills!!!”

I had the priveledge to perform surgery on a 100 year old patient yesterday. The second picture is from this morning, she was all smiles and keeping me on my toes.

Today, we were able to implant a “top secret device” that is to be launched later this year. We are helping with the initial data acquisition and experience for the new device prior to its official launch. The device worked impeccably well and I am looking forward to helping develop some new techniques and to help improve its utilization.
