Austin Air

Austin Air Clinically proven HEPA and activated carbon air purifiers with a 5-year filter life. Austin Air has been improving indoor air quality since 1990. Why us? No bias.

The way we live is changing. As we spend more time at home, the need for clean air, free from contaminants has never been more important. Here at Austin Air, we understand that choosing the right air purifier, to protect you and your family, is a big decision. You can’t see indoor pollutants and you can’t see airborne viruses. You need to know the air purifier you choose will protect you and your loved ones, without you even knowing it. So, the big question is Why Austin? We are the only air purifier proven to remove pollutants in independent clinical trials. Carried out by leading university hospitals. We had no involvement in the trials. No influence. In government tests we outperformed over 100 other air purifiers. This led to work with FEMA and the American Red Cross during some of America’s most challenging times, including 9-11, Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Sandy, and the 2015 SolCal gas leak in California. We are the only air purifier with a 5-year filter life. No other air purifier comes close to this. No expensive filter changes, just plug your Austin in and let it run. We are the only air purifier using 60 sq. ft. of True Medical Grade HEPA. There are lots of air purifiers using Medical Grade HEPA. But it’s only a fraction of the HEPA that we use. This ensures a long filter life and the effective removal of viruses*, bacteria and allergens. We are the only air purifier to use 780 cubic inches of Activated Carbon. Activated Carbon can also be found in lots of other air purifiers. But nothing close to 780 cubic inches. This guarantees your home will be free from chemicals and VOC’s. We are the only air purifier constructed using solid steel and a non-toxic powder coated paint. No plastic, no polystyrene, no off gassing. This year we celebrate 30 years of clean air. 30 years of protecting our customers. 30 years of ensuring the air you breathe is clean, safe and free from contaminants. For more information, contact us today to learn more about our units and how we can help protect you and your family.

*Covid-19 is a new strain of virus that as yet, remains untested. However, the Medical Grade HEPA technology used in our filters is proven to remove up to 95% of all airborne contaminants as small as 0.1 microns.

🎉 FUN FACTS FOR FEBRUARY!

Today, February 24, 2026, we’re celebrating the birthday of Austin Air founder Richard Taylor. He would have been 81.

So it feels only right to close out this series by heading back to where his story began: Creighton Mine, Ontario… a place that is no longer on the map.

Literally. It’s a ghost town, no buildings remain.

Opened in 1900, Creighton Mine became one of the most significant nickel mines in the world. It was about 4.25 hours northwest of Toronto, near Lake Huron. In true company town fashion, it was built around the mine. At its height, about 2,200 people lived there.

In 1986, the corporation that owned the mine and town announced to residents that they had two years to find somewhere else to live. By 1988, the town had been bulldozed. Nothing is left but cellars and building foundations.

You might think of the “American West” when you hear “ghost town” but over the last century, Northern Ontario has had many mining towns vanish in boom and bust fashion.

But here’s what makes Creighton different from many others: although it’s not a formal municipality anymore, it hasn’t faded away completely. Former residents, who call themselves “Creightonites,” still hold reunions to keep the spirit of the community alive long after the buildings disappeared.

How many people do you know whose hometown is now a real-life ghost town?

Richard Taylor’s life began in a place defined by grit, industry, and loyalty. If you’ve been following our 35th anniversary posts, that origin story probably feels fitting.

Have you ever visited a ghost town? 👻 Tell us where.

Your office may look clean. But what about the air?

Airborne irritants like perfumes, colognes, and VOCs can build up in shared spaces. For those with respiratory conditions like asthma and COPD, that exposure isn’t just unpleasant — it can trigger an attack or wheezing.

The Austin Air HealthMate Plus is engineered to address gaseous chemicals, smoke, and odors. In addition to 60 square feet of HEPA to capture particles, the HealthMate Plus has a powerful blend of activated carbon and zeolite impregnated with potassium iodide — quickly clearing the air when you turn it up, and practically silent when set on low.

Here is what one happy customer shared: “I like the HealthMate Plus. I put it in my office. So many clients come in smelling of scented products. It cleans it out of the air quickly on a higher speed. Most of the time I keep it on low and it is whisper quiet.” — Anne R.

Are chemical laden fragrances from colleagues or customers making you feel sick at work?

HARD TRUTH: The air you’ve been breathing impacts your brain health.

A new study followed 27.8 million Americans over 18 years found that long-term exposure to fine particulate air pollution (PM2.5) was associated with an 8.5% higher risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

The scale of the dataset makes these findings difficult to dismiss as statistical noise.

Importantly: this wasn’t extreme smog versus pristine air. It was the kind of difference many communities experience based on traffic density, regional industry, wildfire smoke, and geography.

As wildfire seasons lengthen and urban density increases, the conversation around long-term cumulative exposure becomes more relevant.

Air quality is not abstract. It is a daily exposure — and indoor environments play a central role.

From the Austin Air Archives… 📷

As part of our 35th anniversary celebration, we’re digging into three and a half decades of history and sharing moments that helped shape who we are today.

This action shot dates back to the early 1990s (around 1994) and features two of the major pillars of Austin Air — Joyce and Dana — alongside our founder, Richard.

We’re proud card-carrying members of the Richard Taylor Fan Club so we’re always happy to spotlight him but we’d be remiss if we didn’t make it clear — from the very beginning, Austin Air has been a collaborative environment.

Joyce and Dana were instrumental in those early years, helping transform a bold idea into a growing company with real staying power. The spirit you see in this photo — heads together, reviewing, refining, problem-solving — wasn’t staged. It was (and still is) how we operate.

Thirty-five years later, that ethos remains unchanged. We believe the best ideas are built together. Whether we’re designing filtration systems, refining manufacturing processes, or supporting customers, Austin Air has always taken a team approach.

Austin Air: 35 years of clean air, craftsmanship, and care… plus plenty of collaboration!

🎉 FUN FACTS FOR FEBRUARY!

Austin Air has officially been leading the air purifier industry for 35 years (since before there even was an industry…), and we’re celebrating throughout 2026.

One way we’re marking this milestone is by bringing you Fun Facts for February — a series featuring little-known stories about Austin Air, air quality, and the people behind it.

This week’s fun fact takes us to Toronto, 1969, and features Richard Taylor, Austin Air’s founder.

Before working in the appliance industry, Rick was a 24-year-old concert promoter booking shows at the Rock Pile — a former Masonic Temple turned rock venue.

That year, he and his partner John Brower booked Led Zeppelin twice — before the band became a global phenomenon. It is an early and impressive example of Rick’s ability to recognize something special before the rest of the world caught up.

The February show drew a small but captivated audience. But by the time Zeppelin returned in August to play two shows in one night, their fame — and their fee — had skyrocketed.

On the night of that August double show, Zeppelin’s notoriously aggressive manager, Peter Grant, demanded significantly more money between sets. Always the professional, Rick produced the original signed contract at the earlier rate. In response, Grant tore it up!

Things escalated from there! Rock Pile employees tried to seize Zeppelin’s instruments as collateral and someone else swiped the distributor cap from the band’s equipment truck to stop them from leaving.

The crowd was already in the venue and eventually, the extra money was delivered and the show ultimately went on — but it was a fatal blow. Toronto rock lore and the Canadian Encyclopedia both state that the fallout helped push the Rock Pile toward bankruptcy.

From impresario to inventor is a surprising career but bold moves and big pivots were kind of Rick’s thing.

It’s lucky for us he got out of the music industry.

Have you, or anyone you know, ever found success by seeing what others didn’t or as an early adopter of something?

Here’s another throwback photo from the Austin Air archives in celebration of our 35th anniversary.

This ad dates back to the 1990s and features a message that still holds up beautifully: POLLUTION: Mold, smoke, dander, dust… SOLUTION: Austin Air HealthMate.

At first glance, the ad may not look especially dated — clear skies and an Austin Air purifier. But one detail is particularly 90s-coded: cigarette smoke is specifically highlighted as a major indoor air pollutant.

At the time, smoking indoors was still common in homes, workplaces, and restaurants so secondhand smoke exposure was a daily reality for many.

Fast forward to today. Smoking indoors is far less accepted and is banned by law in many workplaces (although some states have no restrictions at all), but overall, the self-inflicted indoor air challenges caused by smoking haven’t disappeared — they’ve evolved.

Many people now deal with exposure to secondhand va**ng. E-cigarette aerosols include ni****ne, heavy metals, and carcinogens like benzene. Sadly, va**ng is so rampant among teenagers that is common for kids to v**e in their actual school buildings.

Wildfire smoke has also become a much bigger threat than it was when this ad first ran, with many people in the US experiencing smoke hazards in areas thousands of miles from the fire itself. Who can forget the 2023 wildfires that blanketed huge parts of Canada and the US with smoke hazards.

If we were to redesign this ad today, that cigarette would be replaced with a v**e pen or a wildfire smoke plume — but the message would stay the same.

Whatever your indoor air quality concerns, Austin Air is — and always will be — your indoor air POLLUTION SOLUTION.

What pollutants are you dealing with in your home or workplace right now? Is secondhand smoke still an issue or have wildfires impacted your area for the first time in recent years? Tell us in the comments below.

Our Story

In the late 1970’s, the founder of Austin Air began his mission to improve respiratory health. He realized that the quality of the air we breathe had a direct impact on us. By improving the air in our environment, he knew that he would improve the quality of our lives. At that time, household air cleaners were designed for cosmetic cleaning and were only equipped to remove visible dust from the air. However, it is the tiniest particles and gases, invisible to the naked eye, that are responsible for most asthma attacks and allergic reactions. There was nothing available that was even close to being able to remove contaminants of this size. Starting from scratch, we looked beyond what was already being used. We focused our research on the substances that were being used to filter out the tiniest particles for other purposes. Our search led us to the Centre for Disease Control in Atlanta, Georgia. We found that high-efficiency particulate air filters (HEPA filters) were being used in laboratories and clean rooms to keep harmful microorganisms from spreading to other parts of the building and out into public spaces. We knew that by developing a smaller-scale version of the HEPA filter, we were on our way to finding a solution. We then continued our search to find a substance that would remove gas molecules from the air. This led us to the U.S. army, where we learned about the effectiveness of activated carbon in gas masks. We had found the answer, the activated carbon, together with the HEPA filter was used to develop the world’s first high efficiency domestic air cleaner, the Austin Healthmate™. Effectively removing dust, particles and molecular gases, the Austin Healthmate ™ remains the gold standard air cleaner, to which all other air cleaners are compared. Over the years, our on-going research has kept us in close communication with respiratory experts and the medical community. We are frequently learning of new ways to help more diverse groups of people. It was our work with Dr. Doris Rapp, an internationally renowned expert in child allergies and best-selling author that resulted in the Healthmate Plus™, designed to help the chemically sensitive. The expertise and guidance of a renowned pulmonary specialist working in one of the country’s leading University Medical Centres was essential in the development of what would become known as the National Sleep Foundation Bedroom Machine™. A machine designed to treat those suffering from sleep related problems such as sleep apnoea and insomnia. This brings us to where we are today. After many years of working closely with members of the medical community, the US military and organisations such as the Centre for Disease Control, we have found new ways to develop and perfect our products. It has been this commitment to constantly improving our air cleaners that makes Austin Air a market leader. Our products are now sold in over 130 countries around the world, despite never having advertised nationally or internationally. Austin Air has built its business solely on personal recommendations and word-of-mouth success stories. It is our goal that one day, all those suffering from chronic respiratory illness will breathe a sigh of relief, effortlessly.
