The Department of Education recently proposed that post-baccalaureate nursing degrees should be recategorized in a manner that would make graduate nursing students only eligible for half the amount of federal loans as graduate medical students. Nurses are the backbone of health care in the U.S. and the nation's most trusted profession. This move would further erode the nursing workforce, which is already in short supply and in dire need of support. Please sign the petition from the American Nurses Association affirming that nursing is a professional degree. ↙️

The UB Nursing community is mourning the loss and remembering the extraordinary legacy of Dr. Juanita Kirkland Hunter, emeritus faculty and alumna, who died on Nov. 14. Among her numerous accolades, Dr. Hunter was the first SON faculty member to be inducted as a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing—one of the highest honors in the nursing profession.

In 2017, she identified a critical need for nurses to fulfill more executive leadership roles: "In the past, nurses were limited in attaining leadership positions in the broader society. We do not see enough representation from nursing on corporate boards in health care. We can do better, and we should do better."

Amanda Joy Anderson, 2024 graduate of the UB Nursing PhD program and adjunct instructor: "While stable housing is a critical gap, we focused on modifiable factors relevant to our nursing expertise: refining health care delivery during care transitions, where breakdowns in important things like medication management and post-hospitalization care can occur." In collaboration with the University at Buffalo School of Management and the Public Health and Health Professions - University at Buffalo, Dr. Anderson led a recent study published in the Journal of Interprofessional Care about how to best support unhoused patients after hopsital discharge.
