🌼 Honoring Dr. Dorothy Lavinia
Brown 🌼

Today we celebrate Dr. Dorothy Lavinia Brown, a trailblazing surgeon, educator, and legislator whose life exemplified courage, resilience, and service. Born in Philadelphia and raised in an orphanage, she pursued her dreams against all odds — becoming the first African American woman surgeon in the American South and the first Black woman Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Brown dedicated decades to patient care and training future doctors, serving as Chief of Surgery at Nashville’s Riverside Hospital and a clinical professor at Meharry Medical College.

Her impact went beyond medicine — in 1956 she became the first single woman in Tennessee to adopt a child, and in 1966 she broke barriers again as the first African American woman elected to the Tennessee legislature, where she championed women’s rights and equality.

Dr. Brown once said she hoped to be a role model “not because I have done so much, but to say to young people that it can be done.”
🌟 That legacy continues to inspire. 🌟

🌿 Honoring Dr. Yvonne Thornton 🌿

During Black History Month, we celebrate Dr. Yvonne S. Thornton, M.D. — the first African-American woman in the United States to become board-certified in maternal-fetal medicine, a specialty focused on high-risk pregnancy care. Her pioneering work helped expand prenatal diagnostics and support for women facing complex pregnancies — changing the standard of care and inspiring generations of clinicians.

From delivering thousands of babies to shaping prenatal testing practices, Dr. Thornton’s legacy resonates deeply with those dedicated to maternal health and support. 🌸

Let’s honor her trailblazing leadership and commitment to care this month and beyond.

We’re pleased to share the launch of a new support service created to strengthen and support doulas throughout New York State!

As we continue to expand our work, Calming Nature Doula Center Inc. is pleased to share our newest initiative focused on supporting doulas, with the launch of our Doula Resource Boutique! A new professional training and workforce development hub designed to support Birth and Postpartum Doulas across Western New York and New York State.

The Doula Resource Boutique was created in response to the growing need for culturally responsive, community-based doula care and the importance of supporting doulas with sustainable career pathways. This initiative is fully funded by the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) Family Services, and there is no cost to doulas who are enrolling in or currently enrolled as New York State Medicaid providers.

The center will offer professional training, New York State Medicaid enrollment guidance, mentorship, workforce sustainability resources, and space for collaboration and peer connection. By removing financial barriers to training and professional support, the Doula Resource Boutique helps strengthen the doula workforce while expanding access to trusted, community-based care, particularly for families in underserved and historically marginalized communities.

We look forward to continuing collaboration with our partners and community as this new resource grows. We welcome opportunities to share more about how this work supports both families and providers across the region.

If you or someone you know would like support please complete our appointment request on our website.

🌿 Honoring Ionia Rollin Whipper 🌿

During Black History Month, we honor Ionia Rollin Whipper, a pioneering Black physician and maternal health advocate who stood in the gap for pregnant people when few resources existed.

In the 1930s, Dr. Whipper founded a home for u***d mothers, offering care, dignity, and protection at a time when pregnancy outside of marriage often meant isolation, shame, and lack of medical support—especially for Black women. Her work centered compassion, safety, and access, long before maternal health equity was part of national conversations.

Her legacy reminds us that pregnancy support has always been community-rooted and justice-driven. At Calming Nature, we continue this tradition by honoring the wisdom, resilience, and humanity of those who came before us—ensuring pregnant and birthing families are supported, respected, and cared for.

✨ We stand on her shoulders.
✨ We carry her work forward.

🤎 Honoring Black Medical Innovation: Freedom House Ambulance Service 🤎

Long before emergency medical services became a national standard, the Freedom House Ambulance Service was already doing the work — with excellence, discipline, and a deep commitment to community care.

Founded in Pittsburgh and operating from 1967–1975, Freedom House was the FIRST community-based emergency medical service (EMS) in the United States. It was operated by Freedom House Enterprises, a Black-run nonprofit organization, created to address the urgent lack of emergency medical care in Black communities. Through a rigorous training program developed in partnership with Presbyterian University Hospital, Freedom House trained Black men as highly skilled emergency medical technicians and established emergency care protocols that would later be adopted nationwide.

At a time when Black communities were underserved and often neglected in emergencies, this nonprofit stepped in with professionalism, innovation, and lifesaving care. Their work not only saved lives locally, but helped shape the foundation of modern EMS systems across the country.

The legacy of Freedom House reminds us that many of today’s medical systems are built on the knowledge, labor, and leadership of Black pioneers whose contributions deserve recognition, respect, and remembrance.

We honor Freedom House Ambulance Service for shaping emergency medicine and protecting lives when it mattered most. 🤎
