See below for all Dr. Shafiq's insights on HFM symptoms!
Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD) may sound scary, but for most families, it’s a common childhood illness that’s usually mild and short-lived though still uncomfortable for kids (and adults, too).
HFMD spreads easily through schools, daycares, and homes, especially when little hands are sharing toys and putting fingers in their mouths. Early symptoms often include a low fever, sore throat, or fussiness, followed by painful mouth sores and a rash or small blisters on the hands, feet, or diaper area.
There’s no medication to “cure” HFMD, but comfort care goes a long way: hydration, cold foods like smoothies or ice pops, and over-the-counter pain relievers (never aspirin for children). Good handwashing and disinfecting shared surfaces are key to preventing spread.
In rare cases, complications can occur so knowing when to call the doctor matters. Dehydration, high or prolonged fever, worsening symptoms, or difficulty swallowing should never be ignored.
Dr. Nimra Shafiq of General Physician, PC reminds parents that most children recover within 7–10 days with rest and supportive care and that staying informed is one of the best tools parents have.
