Back in 2021, on February 7th, I woke up unable to open my mouth. This was preceded by about 9 months of intermittent locking (waking up unable to open, then being able to eventually manipulate it to open). This is called a Disc Displacement Without Reduction. While I was already signed up for a TMJ mini-residency course, I had not yet attended and felt so lost and helpless. Even as an orthopedic PT having practiced 16 years at that point, I hadn't remembered learning anything about this condition in school. I was luckily referred by my network of PT friends to a fabulous and knowledgeable TMJ PT, Michelle Finnegan (who now moonlights with us here at NVMPT on Saturdays!), who helped me navigate this weird world of TMJ dysfunction, and go from about 20 mm of mouth opening to 36 mm in a matter of weeks. PT treatment was so wildly successful for me and it changed my outlook on where I wanted my career to go. I decided shortly after I completed the residency that I wanted to treat TMJ Dysfunction, made Michelle my unofficial mentor (and friend!), and only 2 years later, I opened NVMPT---a specialty PT clinic that evaluates and treats TMJD , headaches, and orofacial pain. Two and a half years later, this little niche of my field continues to be rewarding for me to be able to help people who are scared and anxious about what is happening to their bodies when very few professionals out there understand the jaw joint. We are here to help you navigate this world and recover from your TMJD! (P.S. 5 years later, and I have 42 mm of mouth opening without any residual issues!)
