Angela Gilmour, LCSW, LLC

Angela Gilmour, LCSW, LLC Angela Gilmour is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a private counseling practice in Burke, VA. She specializes in Individual/Marriage Therapy.

I am a licensed clinical social worker in the state of Virginia. I earned a Masters of Social Work from Washington University in St. Louis and I earned a Bachelors of Social Work from Indiana University. During that time, I also completed course work in Biblical Counseling from Covenant Theological Seminary. I began my practice in 1996 and have clinical experience working with individuals, couples and families. I have practiced in inpatient, day program, and outpatient settings. In these settings, I have treated a variety of individuals, from those with serious mental illnesses & substance dependence to individuals dealing with difficult life transitions. Presently, I work with clients facing the following issues:

depression
anxiety
anger
perfectionism
poor self-image
social anxiety/shyness
marital stress
communication/conflict resolution
life transitions
"mommy guilt"
parenting stresses

I utilize clinically proven therapy techniques, such as Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy. My goal is to use my training, knowledge and skills to walk along side each person, in order to help them make and meet their goals. I am also a trained facilitator for PREPARE/ENRICH curriculum for couples. For those wanting faith-based therapy, I seek to help clients work through their issues using therapeutic methods that are consistent with a Christian worldview and the teachings of the Bible. Need a Speaker for your Moms Group? I am available to speak on the topics below for your Preschool, MOPS, or other groups supporting Moms. Speaking Topics

Taming Anger (Inside and Out) - Being a mom can be FRUSTRATING! Just getting kids ready and out of the house can push our patience to the limit. We want to be calm Mamas but we lose it. We yell and say and do things we regret. Or we stuff those feelings and stew about them for hours. Anger is part of life but how we deal with this anger has huge consequences. In this session, we will identify how we respond to angry feelings and discuss ways to deal with anger in a healthy, constructive way. Managing Fear, Stress, and Worry - From the moment we find out we are pregnant or adopting, we begin to worry. As our children grow, our worries change with each life stage. Concern for our children is part of our Mommy DNA, but when worries or fears grow, they can begin to cloud our judgement and steal our peace. In this session, we will identify how our worries effect us and our families and discuss tools to manage these emotions in a healthy way. Tackling "Mommy Guilt" - Guilt can be a constant companion for many moms. We battle with the disconnect between how we want to be as a mother and the reality of day-to-day mothering. We hear the "shoulds" of our culture, seek the advice of "the experts", and endlessly compare ourselves to other moms. Our list of "Good Mom" qualities grow while our energy wains. We can end up feeling like terrible mothers. We either exhaust ourselves (and our families) in the elusive pursuit of the perfect family or we just give up trying but continue to battle with the guilt. In this session, we will identify from where this guilt comes, how it effects our family and identify tools to begin to combat "false guilt" and respond appropriately to "healthy guilt". Finding Purpose in the Chaos - Motherhood can be very rewarding. However, there are also times and seasons where that sense fulfillment is lost. Changing one more diaper, running one more carpool, cleaning up another mess that will reappear within hours (or minutes!) is exhausting. Sometimes it seems all we do as mothers doesn't matter. Then throw in our other roles as wives, sisters, friends, daughters, employees, bosses, church members, and community members and that can spell CHAOS! In this session, we will spend time exploring all these facets of ourselves and identify some tools to see how God is weaving all these threads into the tapestry of our purpose. I am available to speak on any of these topics but I am adding talks so feel free to contact
me to see if the subjects in which your Moms are interested is something I can address.

How we can help teens and young adults

Being a teenager or young adult today is not simple.

Between academic pressure, social media, shifting identity, family stress, faith questions, and constant comparison, many teens and young adults in Northern Virginia are carrying far more than they show on the surface.

At our practice in Burke, VA, we specialize in helping adolescents and young adults feel understood, grounded, and less alone — without shame and without minimizing their faith questions or emotional struggles.

Here’s what makes our approach different.

1. We Understand That Behavior Is Communication

When teens withdraw, lash out, overachieve, or shut down, it’s rarely “defiance.”

It’s often stress.

Or anxiety.
Or feeling misunderstood.
Or trying to survive something overwhelming.

Our trauma-informed approach means we look beneath the behavior to understand what’s happening in the nervous system and in the teen’s inner world. Instead of asking, “What’s wrong with you?” we ask:

“What happened?”
“What feels unsafe?”
“What feels too heavy to carry alone?”

This lowers defensiveness and increases trust — especially with teens who are tired of being corrected.

2. We Help Regulate the Nervous System — Not Just Talk About Feelings
Many teens and young adults struggle with:

Anxiety
Panic
Emotional overwhelm
Shutdown or numbness
Irritability
Sleep disruption

Traditional talk therapy alone isn’t always enough.

We integrate trauma-informed, body-aware approaches that help young people understand how stress lives in their bodies. We teach practical skills to:

Calm anxiety
Reduce emotional flooding
Increase resilience
Improve emotional regulation

When the nervous system feels safer, real growth becomes possible.

3. We Work with Faith — Not Against It
For many families in Burke and the surrounding Northern Virginia area, faith matters.

At the same time, teens and young adults often wrestle with:

Doubt
Religious pressure
Shame
Church hurt
Confusion about identity
Fear of disappointing parents or God

We provide Christian therapy that is clinically grounded and emotionally safe.

That means:

No preaching.
No minimizing mental health struggles.
No using faith to silence hard emotions.

Instead, we help teens explore how their faith intersects with anxiety, identity, relationships, and purpose — at a pace that feels respectful and authentic to them.

4. We Strengthen Attachment — Not Just Independence
Young adulthood is often framed as “be independent.”

But healthy independence grows from secure attachment.

Many teens and young adults struggle with:

Fear of disappointing others
Over-functioning and perfectionism
Emotional distance in relationships
Difficulty setting boundaries
Feeling unseen in their family

Our attachment-based work helps them:

Understand their relationship patterns

Develop secure identity
Build healthier friendships and dating relationships
Communicate needs without shame

This is especially important for college students and young adults transitioning out of the home.

5. We Partner with Parents — Without Breaking Teen Trust
Parents often ask:

“How do I support my teen without pushing them away?”

We help parents:

Understand adolescent brain development
Reduce power struggles
Improve emotional safety at home
Stay connected during hard seasons

At the same time, we protect the teen’s therapy space so it remains a place of trust and honesty. When parents and teens both feel supported, the whole system begins to shift.

6. We Understand the Unique Pressures of Northern Virginia
Teens and young adults in this region often face:

High academic expectations
Competitive environments
Achievement pressure
Performance identity
Social comparison
Fast-paced family life

We normalize these stressors while helping young people build internal stability that isn’t dependent on performance.

Your child is more than their GPA.
More than their sport.
More than their college acceptance.

We help them build identity rooted in secure attachment, emotional resilience, and personal values.

Who We Help
We work with teens (13+) and young adults navigating:

Anxiety and panic
Depression
Trauma and complex trauma
Religious hurt
Family conflict
Identity development
Perfectionism
Relationship struggles
College and life transitions

We offer both in-person therapy in Burke, VA and telehealth across Virginia.

A Safe Place to Be Fully Known
Adolescence and early adulthood are seasons of profound development.

When young people have a space where they feel seen — not judged — something shifts.

Defensiveness softens.
Shame decreases.
Curiosity increases.
Growth begins.

If you’re a parent seeking support for your teen, or a young adult looking for therapy in Northern Virginia (or telehealth across Virginia), we would be honored to walk alongside you.

Eleanor Daniels, MSW

I work with teens and young adults facing anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts and self harm. I know we all wrestle with the spirits of doubt, fear, despair, unforgiveness, unworthiness and self-hatred, especially during the teen and young adult years. In those moments we have two choices. Either crumble under the weight of those spirits or choose to step up and answer God's call. Though sometimes we need a little reminder. That is how I view the work that I do.

After years of spiritual growth, formal schooling, professional work experiences and my own "little reminder", I am now in the position to join you on your journey to answer God's call.

“Shame dies in the light”

Someone very close to me told me that statement and it has guided my social work journey ever since. Whether you're facing anxiety, depression, self-harm, or suicidal thoughts, opening up to someone who responds with empathy and understanding helps dissolve shame. I acknowledge the privilege it is to be that person for you. I view the therapeutic relationship as one that is built on honesty, vulnerability, authenticity and cooperation. Sometimes you lead, sometimes we walk side by side, and sometimes I take the lead-but no matter what, you will never be alone.

My Approach

My personal experiences, professional background, and formal education have equipped me with tools and solutions that can help address the challenges you may be facing. For over 5 years I have gained experience supporting children, adolescents, and adults through both case management and clinical social work roles. I’ve worked across various levels of care, including acute crisis stabilization, residential treatment, partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient programs. I also have experience working with clients with a variety of mental health diagnoses. I value collaborative care and am more than happy to speak with other professionals regarding your treatment. I’m passionate about collaborating to find solutions that truly resonate with you.

I draw from a range of therapeutic approaches—including cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, the collaborative assessment and management of suicidality (CAMS), and motivational interviewing—because I believe there’s no one-size-fits-all path to healing. For clients who feel it aligns with their journey, I also offer faith-based counseling as an additional layer of support.

I am a Supervisee in Social Work under the supervision of Angela Gilmour, LCSW.

Oh friend, I know this can be hard. But we must start where people are, not where we want them to be.

This isn’t about excusing bad behavior on their part. It’s about learning how to manage our responses and our desires. It’s about being honest with where they are spiritually and emotionally. It’s being realistic in our assessment of what they are and are not capable of.

Because one of the quickest ways to frustrate and fracture a relationship is to try and hold someone accountable to unrealistic expectations.
