Having visual feedback when practicing articulation sounds is a great way to increase a child’s awareness of correct versus incorrect productions.💙

In this session, a mirror was placed at the child’s height so they could see their own mouth while practicing sounds. The therapist asked the child to give a thumbs up if it was correct or a thumbs down if it wasn’t, to see if the child was able to see and hear the difference. These skills are so important because they are the foundation for self-corrections which is necessary when targeting sounds in conversation.💜

🤗Using Minimal Pairs in Speech Therapy: Why It Works for Kids with Phonological Disorders🤗
One of our favorite (and most effective!) tools in speech therapy for phonological disorders is minimal pairs therapy. If you’ve ever wondered why your child is practicing words like “tea–key” or “pat–bat”, here’s the reason!

💜What are minimal pairs?�They’re pairs of words that differ by just one sound—like “sip–ship” or “coat–goat.”�For kids who substitute or omit sounds, these quick contrasts help them hear the difference and use the correct sound in real words.

💙Why minimal pairs work so well:�• They teach kids that changing a sound changes meaning�• They help break long-standing error patterns (like fronting or stopping)�• They make practice meaningful and functional�• They give kids clear, fast feedback through real-life words�• They build confidence as kids realize, “Oh! They sound different when I say it right!”

💜Who benefits?�Children with phonological disorders, where sound errors follow patterns, often make the quickest progress with minimal pairs.

As adults, many of us may use GIPHs to communicate via text and/or email with others. But did you know there is a GIPHY website, too? 💜

These short clips are an amazing resource and can make concepts easier to understand (versus a flat picture/photograph).

GIPHs can be used to target articulation of sounds, putting target words into sentences, answering “wh” questions, problem solving situations, labeling emotions, and so much more! 💙

Mixed textures (such as soups and casseroles) can be very tricky and overwhelming for a child that is considered a, “picky eater”. The different textures of each food item being combined can make a child feel uncomfortable before ever even trying a bite. 🍽️💜

Separating the foods within the soup/casserole makes the food item seem less overwhelming and overstimulating. When presenting items in this way, it’s important to keep the portions small and only choose a few items to decrease the likelihood of feeling overwhelmed. 🍲💙

Trains and magnetiles go together like peanut butter and jelly! 🚂

When working on spatial concepts (in, on, under, over, through, etc), it’s important to start with objects that you can touch and feel to help make these concepts easier to understand.💜

In today’s session, we built tunnels for the trains to go through to work on expanding our understanding and use of these concepts. It was so fun to take a preferred toy and make it educational in so many ways while still having fun!💙
