MTHFR stands for Methylenetetrahydrofolate Reductase—a gene responsible for processing the MTHFR enzyme. When this gene has a mutation, the body's detox and methylation processes may be impaired. Around 30-40% of Americans have an MTHFR mutation, and it can significantly impact health.
What Does an MTHFR Mutation Mean for You?
◾Detoxification is harder at a cellular level.
◾Folate processing is impaired, making it difficult to convert folic acid (synthetic B9) or folate (natural B9) into a usable form.
◾High homocysteine levels, which can impact metabolism and the blood system.
◾Low glutathione, making it harder for the body to detox.
◾Methylation issues, preventing genes from turning on and off to repair, destroy, or build cells.
◾Up to 90% of essential enzymes for normal cell function may be missing in those with one or two MTHFR mutations.
Signs to Look For -
In Babies:
◾Tongue and lip ties
◾Stork bites, hemangiomas, sacral dimples
◾A visible blue vein on the bridge of the nose (known as a “sugar bug”)
Poor Gut Function:
◾Malabsorption, SIBO, eczema, psoriasis
◾Histamine intolerance, autoimmune disorders
◾Behavioral and neurological challenges
Mental Health Issues:
◾Anxiety, depression, OCD, bipolar disorder
◾Schizophrenia, panic attacks, ODD
These conditions may stem from the body's inability to absorb and use key nutrients like B vitamins, essential fatty acids, folate, and minerals.
Research Suggests a Link Between MTHFR Mutations and:
◾Digestive disorders
◾Chronic fatigue and chronic pain
◾Mental health conditions
◾Heart issues
◾Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s
◾Recurrent miscarriage
Medications to Be Cautious Of:
Certain medications may further deplete essential nutrients and impair detox pathways:
◾Folic acid (synthetic B9, which can block natural folate absorption)
◾Antidepressants
◾Birth control
◾NSAIDs
◾Nitrous oxide
◾Antacids
◾Antibiotics
◾Synthetic hormones
◾Anticonvulsants
While you can’t change your genetics, epigenetics shows that your environment, diet, and lifestyle choices matter.
Here’s How You Can Support Your Body:
◾Limit toxin exposure – Reduce pharmaceuticals, heavy metals, EMFs, and household chemicals.
◾Choose natural forms of folate – Eat beans, legumes, asparagus, broccoli, leafy greens, and citrus. Do NOT eat pastas, grains that say “enriched,” “fortified” or have folic acid in the ingredients list!
◾Support detox pathways – Help your liver with milk thistle and dandelion root, and practice consistent detoxing.
◾Improve your home’s environment – Reduce EMFs, switch to natural cleaning and personal care products, and improve air quality.
◾Lower stress levels – Chronic stress impacts methylation and detoxification.
◾Work with a naturopath or biomedical/integrative doctor to tailor a plan that supports your body.
Your genes don’t define your entire health—what you put into and around your body can.
