One of the most helpful things to remember in the early days of breastfeeding is just how tiny your newborn’s stomach really is. 🤍
On day one, it’s about the size of a cherry — holding only about 5–7 ml at a time.
Because of this, newborns are designed to feed often, not take large volumes. Frequent feeding is how your baby stays satisfied and how your body receives the signal to bring in a strong milk supply.
Sometimes when babies want to nurse frequently, it can feel like something must be wrong — like they aren’t getting enough. But in most cases, this pattern is simply normal newborn biology.
Routine supplementation isn’t necessary for many families and, when not medically indicated, can sometimes interfere with the natural supply-and-demand process of breastfeeding.
What helps most in the early days:
• lots of skin-to-skin
• feeding on cue
• trusting those small but powerful feeds
Your baby’s stomach is small on purpose — and your body is beautifully designed to meet that need. ✨
You’re not doing it wrong, mama. You’re learning together.
