In the coming weeks, you may feel bombarded by messages encouraging you to diet, cut out food groups, excessively exercise, or generally try to shrink yourself or change your physique. You are under no obligation to change yourself, just because the calendar shows a different year.

Here is a reminder of the many ways people move through the new year that have nothing to do with dieting or exercise. The start of 2026 can be about connection, rest, creativity, pleasure, curiosity, or simply continuing on as you are. None of those require changing your body.
