Different art materials engage the brain and nervous system in different ways.
Some materials are structured and grounding (like colored pencils or markers), which can help clients who feel overwhelmed or anxious.
Others are more fluid and expressive (like watercolor or paint), which can help access emotions that are harder to put into words.
Some materials invite control and focus, while others allow for release and exploration.
Art therapists are specifically trained to understand how materials impact emotional expression, regulation, and processing. We thoughtfully choose materials based on a client’s needs, goals, and readiness in the moment.
So while you might see paint, clay, or collage supplies in the room, what’s happening is much more than an art project.
It’s a therapeutic process.
🎨 Art therapy engages the brain, body, and emotions in ways words alone sometimes can’t.
