My heart hurts for the dear families impacted by the shooting yesterday at Annunciation Church; I can’t imagine the grief.

As a counselor, I get to see the immediate ripple effects an act of violence has on a community: the parents and students who are afraid to go to school, people in similar faith groups afraid of more violence, people in communities that are afraid of retaliation acts, people questioning the existence of God: how could he allow this?

I don’t have all the answers. But I do know for certain that God grieves with parents who lose children to violence especially because he lost a child to violence, too. And Jesus was afraid in the garden when he was about to die, so he understands intense fear. And he experienced retaliation for others’ assumptions of him, as well as hate and rejection. He chose to experience all manner of pain, and he grieves with all who are grieved, being able to truly say he understands.

Prayers to a compassionate God for the victims, families, and our greater community ❤️
