What is a wake (or visitation)?

A wake is a ceremony that typically comes before a funeral in which friends and family of the deceased can gather and pay their respects. At many wakes, the body is present so that loved ones can reflect on their time together and connect in a physical way; at others, however, the body is not present, and visitors simply gather to remember their shared loved one.

Wakes are typically more casual than funerals, and visitors flow in and out over the course of the event. While dress tends to be reminiscent of that seen at a funeral, it may be lighter or more casual depending on the particular culture of the region or of those hosting the event.

Having a wake is a great way to allow friends and family a chance to give final, personal goodbyes to the departed. This is often an appreciated measure as it tends to help people deal more effectively with grief.
