Here at Every Voice Speech Therapy, we see an influx of students for dyslexia therapy in that third grade year- when reading deficits collide with the demands of third grade and make weaknesses impossible to ignore; but often difficulties (whether with letters, phonology, reading, and so on) were present earlier. It’s no secret that I loathe the wait and see approach - but I do think many parents don’t realize that they can seek evaluations without a referral or (adamantly) request referrals when “wait and see” is recommended.

ESPECIALLY if you (or anyone else) are concerned, a child is frustrated, or the child isn’t meeting milestones (check out my milestone guide on Instagram for more info!)

In the US: call early intervention for 0-3 and your school district for 3-21 for free evaluations, and you can also check with your insurance to see if and how much it covers for private therapy!

Not sure if your child’s sound errors are typical? Here’s the latest info on which sounds develop when?

This is great *updated* info about typical age of acquisition, but it’s just ☝️ thing to consider when determining if a child needs speech therapy. Here are some other things to think about, as well…

1️⃣ How much those errors are impacting overall intelligibility.

2️⃣ How frequently those errors occur in the language they speak.

3️⃣ How relevant the errors are to the child… does their name have that sound?

4️⃣ What type of error they exhibit, if it’s atypical (like backing or a lateral lisp), then we should prioritize intervention.

5️⃣ Are they stimulable for the sound in error? If they are, then that sound is more likely to emerge without intervention (Miccio, Elbert & Forrest, 1999).
