🐶 Bladder Stones in Dogs: What Pet Owners Should Know

This week, we treated a dog with one of the largest bladder stones we’ve seen.

Bladder stones (also called uroliths) are mineral formations that develop inside the bladder. They can range from tiny sand-like particles to large stones that cause significant discomfort.

Signs of bladder stones may include:

• Straining to urinate
• Frequent attempts to urinate
• Blood in the urine
• Accidents in the house
• Acting uncomfortable or restless

In some cases, stones can block the urinary tract — which becomes a medical emergency.

So how do they form?

Bladder stones can develop due to:
• Urinary tract infections
• Genetics or breed predisposition
• Diet
• Urine pH changes

Treatment depends on the type and size:

Some stones can be dissolved with prescription diets.
Others require surgical removal — especially large stones.

The good news? Once identified, we can create a plan to reduce the risk of recurrence.

If your dog is showing any urinary changes — even subtle ones — it’s always worth having them checked. Early detection makes a big difference.

Brushing Your Pet’s Teeth — Yes, Really! 🦷🐾

We know it sounds a little intimidating, but brushing your pet’s teeth is one of the most effective ways to protect their health — and it doesn’t have to be perfect to be helpful.

Tips to get started at home:
• Start slow and keep sessions short
• Use a finger brush or soft pet toothbrush
• Always use pet-safe toothpaste (never human toothpaste)
• Reward your pet with praise, love, or a favorite treat

Even brushing a few times a week can make a big difference. And don’t worry — our team at Butte Veterinary Center is always happy to help answer questions or show you how to get started.

Small steps now can help prevent bigger dental issues down the road 💛🐶🐱

Small daily habits can make a big difference in your pet’s dental health 🪥

Brushing, dental chews, and regular exams all work together to protect teeth and gums.

Not sure where to start? We’re happy to help you find what works best for your pet.

💘🍫 Roses are red, violets are blue… chocolate is sweet — but not for your dog, it’s true! 🍫💘

We love Chocolate Labs, but when it comes to actual chocolate, it’s a big no-no for all dogs. Even small amounts can be toxic and lead to vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, and more.

💡 Valentine’s Day Reminder:
Keep candy, baked goods, and gift boxes safely out of paw’s reach — especially curious noses that think everything smells delicious.

Show your pup some love with extra cuddles, a safe treat, or a long walk instead. 🐾💕

When in doubt, always give us a call — we’re here to help keep your pets safe and loved.

Our Story

Here at Butte Veterinary Center, patient and client care is of utmost importance! Our team works their tails off to provide the BEST care for EVERY PATIENT, EVERY CLIENT, EVERY TIME! Dr. Bruce Pedersen and Dr. Dulce Coulson founded Mining City Veterinary Center in 2016, which grew to maximize the capacity of our original building on Utah Avenue.

In order to continue serving the ever-growing veterinary needs of the community, Mining City Veterinary Center purchased Dr. Robert Cornelius’ practice (formerly Butte Veterinary Services) when Dr. Cornelius retired. In honor of both practices, we chose a new name that celebrated each of the former clinics.

We now operate at 6000 Harrison Avenue as Butte Veterinary Center! Stop in sometime and meet our team! We look forward to seeing you and your furry friends!
