What’s the difference between IOP and PHP; and how do you know which one is actually needed?
This is one of the most common questions we hear.
Many people reach a point where weekly therapy is no longer enough. Symptoms may be interfering with daily life, work, relationships, or the ability to function consistently.
At that point, a higher level of care may help—but the options can feel confusing.
Here’s a simple way to think about it:
• IOP (Intensive Outpatient Program) provides structured support several days a week while allowing clients to continue living at home and maintaining parts of daily life
• PHP (Partial Hospitalization Program) offers more intensive, full-day treatment for individuals who need closer monitoring and more consistent support
Both levels of care focus on:
• Stabilizing symptoms
• Building practical coping skills
• Helping individuals return to daily life with greater capacity
At Rising Up, we offer a holistic, trauma-informed approach and help each person determine the right level of care based on their symptoms, needs, and goals.
If you are a therapist in Massachusetts exploring referral options, or someone wondering what the next step in care might look like, we are here to help.
