What’s the difference between IOP and PHP; and how do you know which one is actually needed?

This is one of the most common questions we hear.

Many people reach a point where weekly therapy is no longer enough. Symptoms may be interfering with daily life, work, relationships, or the ability to function consistently.

At that point, a higher level of care may help—but the options can feel confusing.

Here’s a simple way to think about it:

• IOP (Intensive Outpatient Program) provides structured support several days a week while allowing clients to continue living at home and maintaining parts of daily life
• PHP (Partial Hospitalization Program) offers more intensive, full-day treatment for individuals who need closer monitoring and more consistent support

Both levels of care focus on:

• Stabilizing symptoms
• Building practical coping skills
• Helping individuals return to daily life with greater capacity

At Rising Up, we offer a holistic, trauma-informed approach and help each person determine the right level of care based on their symptoms, needs, and goals.

If you are a therapist in Massachusetts exploring referral options, or someone wondering what the next step in care might look like, we are here to help.

What if trauma is at the root of more mental health challenges than we realize?

At Rising Up IOP, this belief shapes everything we do.

Dr. Jessee Valentine, our Medical Director and a psychiatrist with a whole-person, integrative approach, shares why he was drawn to this program—and why trauma-informed care is essential for real, lasting healing.

Many clients in Massachusetts come into therapy with anxiety, depression, or emotional overwhelm, but underneath those symptoms is often unresolved trauma. And trauma doesn’t always mean one major event. It can be a series of smaller experiences that shaped how someone feels, responds, and moves through the world.

At Rising Up, we don’t just treat symptoms—we work to understand and address the root causes. Our intensive outpatient program provides trauma-informed therapy, structured support, and a compassionate clinical team that meets clients where they are.

This is what allows clients to move beyond coping… and begin truly healing.

What if healing requires more than just talking about what happened?

At Rising Up, we take a holistic approach to mental health care—one that looks beyond thoughts and behaviors to include the body and nervous system.

For many individuals experiencing trauma, anxiety, depression, or grief, insight alone is not enough to create lasting change. That is because emotional experiences are not only cognitive. They are also stored in the body.

That is why our Intensive Outpatient Program integrates evidence-based therapies with approaches like:

• EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), which helps process and reframe traumatic experiences
• Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), which supports nervous system regulation and emotional release
• Mind-body practices that help clients reconnect with themselves in a grounded and sustainable way

This integrative model allows us to treat the whole person—mind, body, and spirit—while maintaining a strong clinical foundation.

For therapists in Massachusetts, this approach can offer clients a new pathway forward when they feel stuck in traditional outpatient therapy.

For individuals, it can open the door to deeper healing that feels both practical and embodied.

What if mental health treatment actually treated the whole person—not just the symptoms?

At Rising Up IOP, that’s exactly what we’re building.

Kolby Andrade, our Clinical Director, shares what makes this intensive outpatient program different: a true whole-person approach that integrates mind, body, and spirit into the healing process.

For many clients in Massachusetts navigating trauma, grief, anxiety, and depression, traditional outpatient therapy can feel incomplete. It often focuses on cognitive and behavioral work—but leaves out the deeper emotional and somatic layers of healing.

At Rising Up, we bridge that gap.

Our intensive outpatient program combines evidence-based clinical modalities with holistic and energy-informed practices. This allows clients to process experiences not just intellectually, but physically and emotionally—leading to deeper regulation, stronger connection, and more sustainable outcomes.

For therapists and referral partners, this means your clients receive care that is both clinically grounded and deeply human. We work collaboratively to support the whole person, not just the diagnosis.

This is where clinical excellence meets heart-centered care.

How do you know when someone may need more mental health support than weekly therapy can provide?

Some common signs include:

• Anxiety or depression interfering with work or school
• Difficulty leaving the house or maintaining daily routines
• Persistent emotional overwhelm
• Trauma symptoms that feel difficult to manage between therapy sessions
• Feeling stuck despite ongoing therapy

Many adults in Massachusetts experience periods like this, yet they are not always aware that additional levels of care exist.

An Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) provides structured therapeutic support several days per week, helping individuals stabilize symptoms while continuing to live at home and maintain aspects of their daily life.

If you are curious about whether IOP might be helpful for yourself, a loved one, or a client, we invite you to attend our free virtual information session on March 26.

During this one-hour session, Leigh-Ann Larson, LMHC, Intuitive & Grief Educator and Kolby Andrade will explain:

• What an IOP program looks like
• How it supports stabilization and skill development
• How therapists and individuals can connect with Rising Up

Sometimes people are doing all the “right” things for their mental health and still feel stuck.

They are attending therapy regularly.
They are trying coping strategies.
They are working hard to move forward.

But symptoms like anxiety, depression, trauma responses, or emotional overwhelm continue to interfere with daily life.

When someone feels stuck in weekly therapy, it does not mean therapy is failing. It may simply mean they need more support, structure, and consistency than a single weekly session can provide.

That is where an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) can help.

IOP programs provide multiple hours of structured therapeutic support each week, helping people stabilize symptoms, learn practical skills, and rebuild day-to-day functioning.

If you have ever wondered how IOP works, Rising Up is hosting a free virtual information session for Massachusetts residents and therapists on March 26.

During this session we will discuss:

• What happens inside an IOP program
• Who may benefit from this level of care
• How structured mental health treatment helps people move forward when they feel stuck
• How individuals and therapists can connect with Rising Up

Learning about your options can be an important first step. Hosted by Leigh-Ann Larson, LMHC, Intuitive & Grief Educator and Kolby Andrade.

In mental health treatment, one of the most important questions is not just how someone feels.

It is how they are functioning in their daily life.

When symptoms like anxiety, depression, trauma responses, or emotional overwhelm begin interfering with everyday activities, it can signal that someone may need more structured support.

At Rising Up, our Intensive Outpatient Program focuses on helping adults restore stability in key areas of daily functioning, including:

• Sleep and energy levels
• Nutrition and self-care
• Ability to leave the house and complete daily tasks
• Work or school participation
• Social connection and relationships
• Overall emotional stability and safety

Improving these areas of functioning is often the first step toward deeper healing.

Through structured therapy, skills training, and consistent support, IOP helps individuals stabilize symptoms so they can return to their lives and continue meaningful therapeutic work.

If you are a Massachusetts resident exploring additional mental health support, or a therapist looking for a trusted IOP referral partner, Rising Up is here to help.

Mental health recovery does not happen in isolation. It happens in connection with community, resources, and the right support system.

At Rising Up, our work goes beyond therapy sessions alone.

In this video, Dawn Nardi, Senior Case Manager at Rising Up, explains how our team helps clients build the practical support systems they need to move forward.

Case management at Rising Up includes helping clients:

• Connect with community groups and supportive networks
• Identify activities and interests that support well-being
• Coordinate care with therapists, psychiatrists, and primary care providers
• Access financial or social service resources when needed
• Ensure their mental and physical health needs are supported together

Healing is not just about managing symptoms. It is also about helping people rebuild stability in their lives.

That is why Rising Up offers a holistic approach that includes clinical care, case management, and community connection so clients can access the full range of support they need.

Massachusetts therapists: How do you know when a client needs more support than weekly therapy can provide?

Many clinicians reach a point where they recognize that something is not working the way it used to. Sessions become focused on stabilization instead of progress, and symptoms begin interfering with a client’s ability to function day to day.

Some of the signs that a higher level of care may be appropriate include:

• Difficulty maintaining sleep, appetite, or basic daily routines
• Increased anxiety, panic attacks, or emotional volatility
• Suicidal ideation or urges to self harm that require closer monitoring
• Missing work or school due to mental health symptoms
• Isolation or withdrawal from social support

When these patterns emerge, the issue is often not motivation or engagement. The issue is capacity.

Intensive Outpatient Programs provide the additional structure many clients need to stabilize symptoms and rebuild functioning. With multiple hours of treatment each week, clients receive skills training, symptom monitoring, and consistent therapeutic support.

At Rising Up, we collaborate closely with referring therapists to ensure continuity of care while helping clients regain stability.

If you are a therapist in Massachusetts supporting clients whose symptoms are beginning to interfere with daily life, we are here to partner with you.
