Transitions & Departures

Allow early exit without pressure
• Some autistic guests may leave earlier than others to avoid sensory burnout.
• “We’re glad you came — stay as long as you’re comfortable.”

Smooth transitions
• “In 5 minutes, we’re taking group photos.”
• “After dessert, some people will be playing games.”

✨ Social Expectations

Give them an ally

Assign one supportive person (could be you) who can check in, help interpret social cues, or step outside with them if the environment becomes overwhelming.

Normalize stimming and breaks
• Rocking, flapping, tapping, or retreating to a quiet room are self-regulation tools — not behavior problems.

3. Prepare a quiet retreat space
• A bedroom, office, or corner with dim lighting.
• Add a chair, blanket, fidgets, or noise-cancelling headphones if possible.

2. Ask about sensory needs
• Preferred lighting?
• Noise sensitivities?
• Foods they avoid or prefer?
• Do they need a quiet space?

A quick, respectful check-in goes a long way.

1. Share the plan ahead of time
• Send a simple schedule: when guests arrive, when food will be served, any activities.
• Let them know what the environment will be like (noise level, number of people, pets, etc.).
