🌙 World Sleep Day: Why Quality Sleep Matters

In honor of World Sleep Day, we’re highlighting the importance of healthy sleep. One condition that can significantly disrupt sleep is sleep apnea—a disorder where breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep.

There are three main types:
• Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA): the most common, caused by airway blockage when throat muscles relax.
• Central Sleep Apnea: occurs when the brain doesn’t send proper breathing signals.
• Complex Sleep Apnea: a combination that can develop during treatment for obstructive sleep apnea.

Common symptoms include: loud snoring, gasping during sleep, morning headaches, dry mouth, and excessive daytime fatigue.

Sleep apnea can increase the risk of serious health issues like high blood pressure, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome, but it can often be diagnosed through a sleep study and treated with a CPAP device that keeps the airway open during sleep.

💙 Prioritizing sleep is prioritizing your health.

“But exhort one another daily, while it is called Today.” (Hebrews 3:13)

Today’s to do list:
Wait patiently – Psalm 27:14
Have faith – 2 Corinthians 5:7
Pray – Philippians 4:6
Think of others – Philippians 2:4
Trust in the Lord – Proverbs 3:5
Give thanks – Psalm 136

Good morning. While we all have demands on us daily, and many of us make lists of what we need to accomplish each day, I want to encourage all of us to not neglect the spiritual. As a matter of fact, I have found when I place that first and primary, it helps everything else go so much better. Our lives can get quite “noisy”, and the best way to deal with the noise is to have a “quiet time” with God to start our day. Jesus put it best when He said that if we would seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, that all the other things would be added unto us. (Matthew 6:33) I believe if we do this spiritual checklist every day that it will help us accomplish the other lists we have in a much better way. So, may none of us get so busy with the daily demands of our physical life that we neglect our spiritual life. And if we take care of our spiritual life, we will be so better in our physical life, and be so glad that we did.

💙 At Concordia, our team members go beyond providing care — they look out for the people and families we serve in ways that truly make a difference. We call these Mission Moments.

Recently, we received a call from Charles about the incredible actions of our physical therapist, Vinny, during a routine visit with his brother-in-law, Robert.

While conducting a scheduled PT visit, Vinny noticed that something wasn’t quite right. Trusting his instincts, he acted quickly and called an ambulance. When Robert arrived at the hospital, doctors determined that he had suffered three strokes. Charles shared that Vinny’s quick thinking and immediate response helped save Robert’s life.

But Vinny’s care didn’t stop there. During the situation, he made sure to call Charles and Diane to keep them informed about what was happening. He stayed with Robert until he was safely placed in the ambulance and even called again later that evening to check on Robert — and on Charles — despite having had eye surgery himself that same day.

Charles told us they have never met someone who gives so much of themselves to others. They described Vinny as a wonderful person and said they will be telling everyone about the caring staff at Concordia. When Charles offered Vinny a gift of appreciation, Vinny kindly declined, saying the best gift would be letting Concordia know how they felt.

Vinny, thank you for the compassion, dedication, and heart you bring to your work every day. You remind us what Concordia care is all about. 💙

“There would be a lot of competitors if jumping to conclusions was made an Olympic sport” John Goetsch

“Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath.” (James 1:19)

Good morning, I enjoy watching the Olympics. The winter Olympics are my favorite of the 2. I enjoy the skiing, the hockey, and I even find myself watching a little bit of that curling stuff (Although I am still not sure I understand it). When I watch all of that, I am glad that jumping to conclusions is not one of the events 😊. While I can’t speak for you, I can speak for myself, that I have been guilty more times than I want to admit of being too quick in jumping to conclusions. How I wish I would have taken that the time to pray for someone and just wait on the truth or the whole story to come out, and for God to work in hearts, before making a hasty conclusion on a matter. How many of us want others to do that for us? All of us. Right? May we then give the same courtesy to others. May we take the admonition of James and be “slow to speak” before we have heard the whole matter. We will be glad we did!

Heart Valves = One-Way Gates
🫀 Your heart has 4 valves that act like one-way doors.
They make sure blood flows in the correct direction and doesn’t leak backward.
🚪 Think of them like security gates that keep traffic moving smoothly.
Healthy valves = healthy circulation.

The Heart’s Electrical System
⚡ Your heart has its own electrical system!
To beat regularly, your heart relies on electrical signals that tell it when to contract and relax.
💡 The signal starts in the sinoatrial (SA) node—your heart’s natural pacemaker.
Then it moves to the atrioventricular (AV) node, spreading through pathways that help the ventricles pump blood out to the body.
Your heartbeat is powered by electricity—literally. ❤️⚡

It's time for more "heartfelt" education from Concordia Home and Community Services. We want you to feel empowered! Today we focus on how our heart pumps and how the blood circulates.

The 4 Chambers of the Heart
🫀 Your heart has 4 chambers that work together like a team.
✅ 2 upper chambers = atria
✅ 2 lower chambers = ventricles
The left and right sides of your heart are separated by a wall of muscle called the septum.
Every heartbeat depends on these chambers pumping in the correct order to keep blood moving where it needs to go.

What is the Circulatory System?
💓 Your heart pumps blood around your body all the time—this is circulation.
Together, your heart, blood, and blood vessels form your cardiovascular system.
🔁 Here’s how it works:
➡️ The right side of your heart sends oxygen-poor blood to your lungs
➡️ Your lungs add fresh oxygen
➡️ The blood returns to the left side of your heart
➡️ Then it’s pumped out to the brain and body

Your heart is basically your body’s delivery service 🚚❤️
