We know that what we’re about to say might get us in trouble: ONE PLATE of mashed potatoes and gravy is NOT one serving of mashed potatoes and gravy.

There. We said it. The truth had to be spoken.

Managing portion sizes is important all of the time, but it is particularly important to remember as we approach the holidays. Here are a couple of serving sizes of popular foods you may be eating soon:

• Stuffing or Potatoes – about the size of an ice cream scoop (1/2 cup)
• Cranberry Sauce or Gravy – the size of a golf ball (1/4 cup)
• Pie – 1/8th -1/6th of a pie
• Turkey – about 3 oz (the size of a deck of cards)

Now, let’s be clear, we don’t expect you to actually take out a measuring cup and measure every serving you eat – no one ever has time for that, especially when there’s delicious food to be eaten! We’d just like you to take into consideration that the 4th ladel full of mashed potatoes with a full side of gravy, or 5th piece of pumpkin pie isn’t the best choice for your health.

Keeping your heart healthy is always important, and for those with it’s something to be extra diligent about. Cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death in people living with diabetes, resulting in 2/3 of deaths in people with type 2 diabetes. On top of that, people with diabetes are twice as likely to have heart disease or a stroke than people without diabetes.

However, you can reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease with proper exercise, diet, and diabetes management. This is something your doctor can provide information and advice about, so if you have questions or are concerned, give us a call today to schedule your appointment at (231) 775-9741.

Did you know that about one third of people with Type 2 Diabetes don’t know they have it?

When you have Type 2 Diabetes, your body struggles to turn carbohydrates in food into energy, which causes sugar to build up in your blood. Over time, this increases your risk for heart disease, nerve and organ damage, and other serious conditions. While this disease can strike people of all ages, early symptoms are mild and the root cause often isn’t discovered until serious symptoms occur. This is why it’s important to watch for warning signs and talk to your doctor about any concerns – trust us, they would rather you come to them with a concern that turns out to be nothing, rather than you not say anything because you don’t want to seem like you’re being “dramatic.”

If you’d like to schedule an appointment, just call us at (231) 775-9741!

As we work to raise awareness of Breast Cancer this month, we want to talk a little about breast self exams.

You should give yourself a breast self-exam once per month about 7-10 days after your period. To best conduct a breast self-exam, use the pads of your 3 middle fingers to move in small circles around the entire breast and armpit area pressing down with light, medium, and firm pressure. Check both breasts for any lump, thickening, hardened knot, or any other breast changes. While it is not necessarily unusual to have lumpy or bumpy breasts, what you’re looking for is a change from the previous month’s exam.

If you discover a persistent lump in your breast or any changes, it is very important that you see a physician immediately. While many lumps are benign, they should still be examined to confirm that they are not cancerous.

If you have questions or need to schedule an appointment, give us a call at (231) 775-9741.

Happy Medical Assistant Week!

We recognize the significant impact our Medical Assistant Team has on patient care in our office. As primary healthcare providers, they often face stressful situations. Despite this, they continue to deliver exceptional service without complaint. We are grateful for their dedication and expertise.

As a token of our appreciation this week, each Medical Assistant received a gift card to Tropical Smoothie and a basket full of fruit for all of them to share. Keep up the fantastic work!
