No single food can protect you against cancer by itself. But research shows that a diet filled with a variety of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans and other plant foods helps lower risk for many cancers. In laboratory studies, many individual minerals, vitamins and phytochemicals demonstrate anti-cancer effects. By including more foods that fight cancer into your diet, you can help reduce your risk of developing cancer.

“But you’re my doctor, shouldn’t you know what medications I’m on already?”

We hear this pretty frequently. And while we do know the medications WE have prescribed to you, physicians don’t always get updates from specialists or ER departments about new medications you may be on.

It’s important to make sure everyone is on the same page, so even if there aren’t any changes, please bring the list.

When you think of someone having a heart attack, you likely imagine the Hollywood-ized version, where someone suddenly clutches their chest and falls over. However, that is not always – of even often - the case, especially for women. Women are more likely to have “nontraditional” heart attack symptoms than men, and women are more likely to have silent heart attacks.

For women, common symptoms of a heart attack include but are not limited to:
• Pain in the back, neck, jaw, or throat
• Indigestion
• Heartburn
• Nausea or vomiting
• Extreme fatigue
• Difficulty breathing

It’s sad, but true. By the time you read this post and scroll on to the next one, someone in the United States will have died from cardiovascular disease. It happens every 36 seconds. However, this disease is preventable in many situations with healthy lifestyle choices – choices such as not smoking, treating high blood pressure, and exercising regularly.

To talk to your doctor about what you can do to prevent heart disease, give us a call today at (231) 775-9741 to set up an appointment!

Many people think they only need to see a doctor when they’re not feeling well; however, seeing your doctor on a yearly basis when you feel healthy is just as important as a visit when you are sick.

Yearly visits promote a closer relationship with your doctor and help build trust between you,
which in turn will make it much easier to communicate and form a treatment plan when you feel unwell or a difficult situation arises.

Additionally, some conditions do not necessarily show symptoms in the beginning stages and yearly check-ins can help with earlier detection, which can result in better outcomes and cost savings too.

To schedule your annual appointment (especially if you’ve missed a few years), give us a call today at (231) 775-9741!

Every time your heart beats it pumps blood through your arteries to the rest of your body. Your blood pressure is how hard your blood pushes against the walls of the arteries. If your blood flows at higher than normal pressures, you may have high blood pressure, also known as hypertension. High blood pressure is a major risk factor for heart disease, which is the leading cause of death in the United States. Millions of Americans have high blood pressure, but many people who have it don’t know it. That’s why it is important to have your blood pressure checked at least once per year.

Some factors that put you at risk for high blood pressure include:
• Age and gender – Blood pressure tends to be higher in older adults. Additionally, before the age of 60, more men than women have high blood pressure; however, after the age of 60, more women than men have it.
• Genetics - Before age 60, more men than women have high blood pressure. After age 60, more women than men have it.
• Lifestyle habits - Eating too much salt, drinking too much alcohol, being obese, smoking, and not getting enough exercise can increase risk for blood pressure.

To talk to a doctor about your blood pressure and how to manage it, give us a call at (231) 775-9741 to set up an appointment!

Not only is today Valentine’s Day, it’s also National Donor Day. So, we want to take time to honor those who are organ, tissue, and/or eye donors as well as those who have registered to be one.

Did you know that every 10 minutes a person is added to the national transplant waiting list, and 20 people die every single day because the organ they need is not donated in time?
