You have done such a great job listening to all of your doctor’s advice – you exercise, don’t eat too much salt, and eat an apple every day! So, as a reward you get to take a day off because you’re well!

We’re sure your boss will understand that this is a national holiday, right?! Wait… since today is a Sunday, does that mean you should have tomorrow off instead, if you’re working today?!

How much of your family medical history do you know? Do you know if there’s a history of heart disease, diabetes, or cancer?

Knowing your family medical history is important so your doctors know if you’re in high-risk groups for certain diseases, and so you can be more aware of certain symptoms of those conditions that run in your family. For example, if you know that diabetes runs in your family, you and your doctor can talk about testing options and keeping an eye on risk factors.

We encourage you to ask about your family members about their medical history and – just as importantly – we encourage you to share health history information with your family members. This information shouldn’t be kept a secret, and you shouldn’t be concerned about “not wanting to worry the family”. Your children, grandchildren, siblings, etc don’t know what medical conditions they should watch for if they don’t know they have a family history of it.

If you learn more about your family medical history, please update us at your next doctor’s appointment!

While it’s important for everyone to get annual eye exams, that’s even more true for those with diabetes.

Unfortunately, many people don’t get their eyes examined until the symptoms of diabetic eye disease are too obvious to ignore such as blurred vision, flashes of light, or seeing “floaters”.

Routine eye exams can help identify problems that, when treated, can prevent or delay vision loss due to diabetic eye complications. If you have questions, give us a call today to schedule your appointment at (231) 775-9741 and we can help you get in touch with a local eye doctor, if needed.

Quitting smoking is a big goal, and for many people it takes time. That’s why the American Cancer Society has put together tools and resources to help. While these tools are available any time, the American Cancer Society is challenging those who smoke to let today – the Great American Smokeout – be the day you join thousands of people across the country to stop smoking.
