The Area Agency on Aging is asking seniors and caregivers to give input on the services you use, meals, transportation, homemaking help, caregiver support, and more. Your feedback helps shape the next 3 years of programs and funding. If you’ve ever wanted something to improve or simply want to keep services strong, this is your chance to be heard.

How much of your family medical history do you know? Do you know if there’s a history of heart disease, diabetes, or cancer?

Knowing your family medical history is important so your doctors know if you’re in high-risk groups for certain diseases, and so you can be more aware of certain symptoms of those conditions that run in your family. For example, if you know that diabetes runs in your family, you and your doctor can talk about testing options and keeping an eye on risk factors.

We encourage you to ask about your family members about their medical history and – just as importantly – we encourage you to share health history information with your family members. This information shouldn’t be kept a secret, and you shouldn’t be concerned about “not wanting to worry the family”. Your children, grandchildren, siblings, etc don’t know what medical conditions they should watch for if they don’t know they have a family history of it.

If you learn more about your family medical history, please update us at your next doctor’s appointment!

Have you noticed the sun setting later and the slightly warmer days we’ve been having?! Spring has officially arrived, and we couldn’t be happier!

As you celebrate by taking down Christmas lights, enjoying the tulips as they pop up, spring cleaning, or whatever is your favorite way to enjoy the season, we’d also like to encourage you to think about ways you can put a little “spring” into your health routine! Here are a few tips to get you started!

Please remember to bring your medications or a list of your medications to every one of your doctor’s appointments. While we know the medications WE have prescribed to you, physicians don’t always get updates from specialists or ER departments about new medications you may be on.

It’s important to make sure everyone is on the same page, so even if there aren’t any changes, please bring the list.

Give us a call today at (231) 775-9741 to set up an appointment!

Update: We will not be open at all today. Hopefully we will see you tomorrow!

Due to weather and a downed line in our parking lot, Family Practice will be closed this morning. It is not safe for patients or employees to open. We don't know the ETA of when the line is being cleared. We may open later but that is not clear at this time. If you have an appointment, we will contact you later for rescheduling.

March is Endometriosis Awareness Month, a painful condition that effects over 11% of women between the ages of 15-44.

Endometriosis occurs when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus. It is often painful with different women experiencing different types of pain – from back pain to pain during sexual in*******se to pain during bowel movements. Women with endometriosis may also have difficulty getting pregnant.

While there is no cure for endometriosis, there are treatments that can help with the symptoms, which can be discussed on a case-by-case basis with your doctor.

This week is Better Sleep Week, so we want to share this little tip from the National Sleep Foundation.

Many of us probably think, “I should really get more sleep” but what steps do you take to make that happen, or what steps do you take to ensure the sleep you do get is restful? Sleep plays a huge role in your mental and physical health; however, around 19% of adults in the United States don’t get enough sleep on a regular basis. The impact of this sleep deficiency on your physical health can include heart problems, immunohealth, cognitive performance, and more.
Sometimes, the problem starts with not being able to fall asleep or just simply not going to sleep when you should – maybe you’re thinking about how that show you’re binge watching will end, maybe it was a long and difficult day at work, or maybe the room isn’t quiet enough for you.

Whatever the case may be, having a sleep routine in place can help. In your sleep routine, include time to unplug electronics, and consider replacing watching television or app-scrolling with reading a book. Gentle stretching or meditation can also remind your mind that it’s time to fall asleep. Finally, consider taking action to calm your senses, such as dimming lights and diffusing essential oils in scents like lavender.

If you experience long-term sleep deficiency, you should consider scheduling an appointment with your doctor. To do so, give us a call at (231) 775-9741 to set up an appointment!

It can be easy to think that exercising is only “worth it” if you’re “really” going to do it – if you’re going to go for a 5-mile hike, if you’re going to do a Yoga class, or if you’re going to break into a sweat. However, exercising for any amount of time is better than no amount of time!

If you only have the time or energy for a walk around the block then just take a walk around the block!
