We know that what we’re about to say might get us in trouble: ONE PLATE of mashed potatoes and gravy is NOT one serving of mashed potatoes and gravy.
There. We said it. The truth had to be spoken.
Managing portion sizes is important all of the time, but it is particularly important to remember as we approach the holidays. Here are a couple of serving sizes of popular foods you may be eating soon:
• Stuffing or Potatoes – about the size of an ice cream scoop (1/2 cup)
• Cranberry Sauce or Gravy – the size of a golf ball (1/4 cup)
• Pie – 1/8th -1/6th of a pie
• Turkey – about 3 oz (the size of a deck of cards)
Now, let’s be clear, we don’t expect you to actually take out a measuring cup and measure every serving you eat – no one ever has time for that, especially when there’s delicious food to be eaten! We’d just like you to take into consideration that the 4th ladel full of mashed potatoes with a full side of gravy, or 5th piece of pumpkin pie isn’t the best choice for your health.
